Why does Tennessee claim 5 national championships when the SEC only recognizes two?

Is the thinking that if y'all use Bama math for NCs, y'all's program will become Bama?

I wish we'd use Bama math and claim several more titles.

We don't need to.

We already have more than the rest of the SEC besides Bama without it.

LSU is second only to Bama in football.

I doubt you really have more titles using Bama math.

On the other hand, Alabama would have many more titles if they used what people thought was Bama math.

The only pre-poll national titles we claim are undefeated teams that won the SoCon/SEC went to the Rose Bowl and played the champion of the Pacific Conference and were named national champs by multiple outlets.

1925 - 8 groups
1926 - 5 groups
1930 - 4 groups
1934 - 4 groups

quote:

36

The AP Poll began in 1936 - Minnesota was #1

LSU 1908 - 1 group
LSU 1935 - 1 group (tied with TCU)
LSU 1936 - 3 Groups (the poll era had begun)

Years Alabama "won" a national title with at least 1 selector

1925
1926
1930
1934
1941
1945
1961
1964
1965
1966
1973
1975
1977
1978
1979
1992
2009
2011
2012
2015
2017

So, using your version of "Bama Math" we have 21 national titles

Oddly enough, those are claimed on the LSU season history wiki page.

But what is it about them that says they are NCs?

Even Alabama's 1941 terrible claim that shouldn't be claimed at all, has a selector.

Here's what is valid to claim IMO.

Before 1936 - Rose Bowl and Math formulas are valid.

After 1936 - Only major polls like the AP(although in the early years it was terrible). Sorry 1941 Alabama.

1998-2013 = Only BCS titles. AP is no longer valid, sorry USC.

2014-present = Only playoff titles, sorry UCF.

Seems like the standard most reasonable people agree on. It's strange that everyone can't just kind of accept that as the best compromise as we could come to and move on.

if Wayne Atchison had never tried to count 1941 so many of these threads would have never existed. Why he decided to count 1941 and not 1945 is amazing to me.

I'm telling you, some plant from Tennessee or Auburn set him up with it and by the time he figured it out it was too late. It's the only logical explanation.

In reality I'm guessing he saw 1945 as a legitimate claim but knew it would be suicide to claim a title at the end of WW2 that was also claimed by West Point. So, he just picked the closest 1 with a "national title" pick by somebody and that was 1941. So stupid.

by the way, the 1975 Alabama team is very underrated in 'those who were hosed.' The way the team progressed each week after the Missouri game and then how Oklahoma bounced back in the polls after a really bad home loss in NOVEMBER has always been a head scratcher.

If Bama used "Bama math", we'd have about 30.

Yes but '77 is the one that gripes me the most. Too young to remember '66.

as I sit here waiting for 5, I looked back at the 1977 through the AP poll's eyes. Alabama made up incredible ground after that Nebraska game. Thanksgiving weekend they were #2 and Oklahoma was #3. But evidently Oklahoma's win over Nebraska really impressed the voters as OU really leap frogged Alabama. And that '77 Nebraska team was living off its name. Not one of Osborne's dominating teams.

Yeah, it even says that on the wiki page, but then when it lists the seasons it has the others marked as NC seasons.

I'm sure it's just some random person who did it.
