Why does Birmingham get to assign the bowl game for each member school?

It didn't always happen like that.

Seems like too much centralized power to me.

Yeah... that really seems fishy, maybe even criminal. I wonder what the FBI would think of that.

Because they control/promote/protect the brand and write the checks after the season is done.

It makes for better bowl matchups than just letting the bowls pick who plays..

The SEC was almost ALWAYS the lower ranked team or had the worst record in the bowl match-ups. Now the SEC can choose which teams play in what games.

Believe it or not but Bear Bryant used to arrange a lot of the bowl games.

This is just great... a new complaint from LSU. I've got to add this to the LSU Butt-hurt form...

"SEC-office-in-Birmingham hates LSU, assigns the powerful LSU team to the Independence bowl on Dec 27." Mississippi State gets fourth SEC slot.

NOT FAIR... MOVE THE OFFICE... LSU will never get to the promised land with the office in Birmingham!

In the old days with much fewer bowl games, Bryant did have a big say, but school ADs such as LSU's Jim Corbett also had a significant role.

Corbett was skillful in selling 7-3 LSU to the '66 Cotton Bowl committee, where they upset unbeaten Arkansas.

OF COURSE the bowl game formally extends the invitations and can make requests, but the SEC office ultimately decides who is going where.

Do they have to follow some type of criteria? Like could they decide to put a 9-3 (5-3) top 15 MSU team in say a shite bowl like Liberty instead of the Citrus bowl where they normally would go in this scenario? Just to insert a team with a worse resume but better name brand in the "good" bowl?

Not really. The Citrus gets first pick then it's a collaborative effort for the following 6 bowls: Outback, Taxslayer, Music City, Texas, Belk and Liberty.

Birmingham and Indy bowls get leftovers.

The birthing pangs of this were 1999 when 10-2 MSU was relegated to play a 6-6 Clemson team in the Peach Bowl because none of the Florida bowls wanted MSU, although they had earned the bid.

Now there is a predetermined deal based on the CFP rankings for the NY6 bowl and overall/SEC record for the Citrus Bowl. The Group Six bowls are "assigned" based on geography, last visit and potential matchups presented by the bowls themselves..
