I was at my brother's place of employment last week and he was showing me this dude's office - every last thing in there is maroon with Aggie logos etc.
Come to find out, he went there for one semester, was booted out for grades but still bleeds A&M for some reason.
On the same token, there are tons of LSU fans here in Houston that didn't go to LSU, yet still claim LSU as "their school"

So did everybody in this thread making fun of sidewalk fans attend the university they root for? Just wondering. I personally have no problem with who people choose to root for.

I have made fun of no one. But yes I did attend and later go back and graduate from State.

Not talking about you. You just asked a question.

Do we know the same Texas??? The only ones that do not follow football, love futball.
They are not Bama/LSU/Arkansas bad about sidewalk, but the numbers are huge. Lot's of Aggies at Collin County Community College, UTArlington, TAMU Commerace, etc.

90% of this state that isn't messican loves football. There are hordes of non alum Aggies, even if they aren't as numerous as the non alum UT fans.

Auburn is bama's daddy.

Bama has the largest negative perception issue with sidewalk fans and should actively try to put an end to it.

I say this with full awareness that I didn't attend Auburn University. So while I would tell anyone I meet that I'm a lifelong and devoted Auburn fan, I wouldn't expect the same respect with regards to my Auburn affiliation as someone who attended and/or graduated should.
But you are actually intelligent.

Why don't you just realize that these people are fans of the school's football, basketball or baseball teams, and not necessarily of the school and leave it at that. They put a lot of money in these schools, so why should you care? They're not taking seats away from you. If you're too cheap to pay big bucks for donations and tickets, and you won't pay out the backside to go to the away games not to mention the bowl games, then leave them alone because they do. Do you think the players care whether the person that follows them to hostile sites are alums or sidewalk(as you call them) fans. They are just happy that they have supporters in those stands.
The players feel that they are a part of we, and I think their judgment on this subject matters more than yours.

Is that not basically what I said (e.g., "doesn't matter to me what they do/call themselves")?
Why are you responding to me specifically?
ETA: ahh, I see. you took offense to my "we" comment. As I said, I just find it strange when some tshirt fans go out of their way to insult grads from other schools, while mixing in the word "we."
I think you read way more into my comment than was intended.
Peace.

They have nothing else to live for and typically go to hourly jobs.

This is a rough estimate but it would put TAMUs fan base at around 2 million making it the largest fan base and thus largest non alum fan base

a&m is in a unique position. They probably have the least side walk fans of any team in the sec.
In Texas they are called T Shirt fans and A&M grads actively hate them from what I read.

Some good answers, some fairly stupid answers. As far as I know, Vandy only has one sidewalk fan, and he posts here. Had he not told me, I would never have guessed he was a sidewalk fan because, frankly, there are plenty of smart, sensible sidewalk fans and plenty of blithering idiot alums.
If -- and I don't concede the point proven -- if sidewalk fans are more rabid and fanatical, a couple points can be made: 1) lots of the more emotional and rabid sorts are actually teenagers, filled with hormones and angst and piss and vinegar. Impossible to judge from a subset that hasn't yet attended any college, let alone the one they cheer for; 2) In addition to the possibly-valid points about insecurity mentioned by other posters, those of us who actually attended said college contribute to the problem by implicitly (or, more often, at least here on the Rant, explicitly) sneering at the sidewalk fans. Their defensiveness and need to prove their bona fides as fans would be an entirely understandable reaction. That's why I refuse to look down on sidewalk fans -- if they love the team and the university, who the hell are we to try to make them feel bad about their credentials? I'll mock people for being just plain dumb, but not for simply being a huge fan.
