I think the PAC 10 is a very good conference, however there are way too many ups and downs with who is in the top tier of the conference. Their isnt the consistency that many people want to see, so they lose some respect. One year its Oregon, Cal, and Washington. Another year it might be OSU, Arizona St, and UCLA that is in the top tier of the conference with USC. USC, for the most part, has been the only steady power in the conference.
I also think that non-conference games early in the season might not be as indicative as games late in the season or bowl games for that matter. Who knows?
I believe most fans, even ours, truly have alot of respect for the Pac 10, but will never admit it because of their feelings about USC.

Just because SEC fans (and most unbiased observers) feel like the SEC is the toughest football conference doesn't mean they think the Pac-10 is necessarily weak. Its just not as strong. What you will find is that when fans get in pissing matches, say, on in internet message board like this one, not only will they the SEC is the best, they will also say the Pac-10 is a dog.
The Big 12 and the SEC are generally considered to be the two toughest conferences. Based on head to head competition this year, you could make a strong argument that the Mountain West conference is better than the Pac 10, but, overall, I wouldn't buy it.
I hope you're writing some sort of paper on all of this. I really do.

Hmmm, which conference has won the most National Championships over the last few year? I wonder why this keeps happening?
And before you start, if you lose to unranked Oregon St, Stanford, etc... there is no arguement that you have a place at the big boy table.

Since we are discussing the BCS era, and we are playing for championships (at least I think that is the objective). How many BCS Championships does the Pac-10 have vs how many the SEC has? Pac-10 has only 1 while the SEC now has 5. That's right, the SEC has 5 of the the last 10 BCS trophies on campus and in the trophy case. Since winning the BCS trophy is the ultimate goal of all BCS confernece teams then the measuring stick for strength should be just that, winning the BCS Championship.
ETA: Only 2 teams have ever won 2 BCS trophys. Which conference are they in?

I don't think the Pac is weak. I think that a Pac team going through the Pac 10 schedule has an easier time than an SEC team going through their SEC schedule. It's because the bottom half of the SEC is stronger than the bottom half of the Pac. So, there are no easy games. For example, this year Washington and Washington State were much weaker than any team in the lower half of SEC. Those games became similar to "rent-a-wins" for their opponents.
The bottom of the SEC this year was Auburn, Arkansas, Miss State and Tennessee. They are not close to gimmes.

Not only do you have the terms backwards but the game was 3 points in OT for UCLA at home. Not a defining moment.

8/30 @ Virginia 1-0 (0-0) W 52-7
9/13 No. 5 Ohio State 2-0 (0-0) W 35-3
9/25 @ Oregon State 2-1 (0-1) L 27-21
10/04 No. 23 Oregon 3-1 (1-1) W 44-10
10/11 Arizona State 4-1 (2-1) W 28-0
10/18 @ Washington State 5-1 (3-1) W 69-0
10/25 @ Arizona 6-1 (4-1) W 17-10

11/15 @ Stanford 9-1 (7-1) W 45-23
11/29 Notre Dame 10-1 (7-1) W 38-3
12/06 @ UCLA 11-1 (8-1) W 28-7
1/01 vs. No. 8 Penn State 12-1 (8-1) W 38-24
Lets review USC's schedule
Virginia 5-7
OSU (enough said about this joke of a team)
Oregan st 9-4 (Brut sun bowl) w vs PITT Ranked #18 at end of year
Oregan 10-3 (Pacific life holiday bowl) w vs Oklahoma st. Ranked #10 at end of year
Arizona st 5-7 overall
Washinton st 2-11 overall
Arizona 8-5
California 8-4 (Emerald bowl) w vs miami
stanford 5-7
Notre Dame HaHa (Sheraton Hawii bowl) w vs hawaii
UCLA 5-8
USC has played 2 teams who have finished in the top 25 and 4 teams that went to bowl games. of which only one team in the bunch was worth a crap and that is Oklahoma st.
This is just some of LSU's opponents and they're bowl records.
LSU Chicken Bowl w vs GT
UF National Champions w vs OKLAHOMA
UGA Capital one bowl w vs michgan st.
Alabama Sugar Bowl L Vs UTAH #2
Ole Miss Cotton Bowl W vs Texas Tech
South Caroline Outback bowl W vs Iowa
That being said I believe USC is in fact a really good team. but I also believe that if they were in the SEC they would be another 8-4 to 10-2 every year. and would not seem to sparkle as much as they do over there in that warm california sun.

USC is the easiest to run down point out their easy road every year because of the 2003 crybaby effect. But its not just USC its teams like OU and OSU that are in the title hunt every year and very undeservingly so. The easy path to an unscaved record year in and year out is something to be jealous of by SEC fans. But, is also something to be very proud of. And the fact that in the last 10 years great teams like UF and LSU have accomplish what they had and capturing 2 national titles a piece by very convincing scored should be a testiment of dominance over all conferences.
So to all SC, OU, OSU fans feel free to shout out your arguments and debates be we know and we know you know whose conference your teams really wish they could hang in...

LSU was technically the home team for this game. Actually they were the designated home team, even though the game was in Arizona State's stadium.
understood, but that's like making a team the designated home team in Tiger Stadium (or anybody else stadium)..you are still only give a certain amount of tickets...the "home" won't have as many fans as the "away" team in their stadium

The Mountain West Conference won six of seven games against the Pac-10 Conference in the regular season.
BYU defeated UCLA and Washington in nonconference play, had a 10-2 mark, and still finished third in the Mountain West.

1)
the weakness in the PAC 10 as opposed to the SEC does not necessarily lie in the top 2-3 teams, but in the fact that beyond that, there are usually no strong teams ...thus, the top teams do not have the same risk in playing week-in / week-out.
If a PAC10 teams has some injuries, they usually get a week, maybe two for healing before it is ABSOLUTELY necessary to play that player...
that luxury does not exist in the SEC.
2)
"Records" do not mean much if the level of the opposition is not taken into consideration.
3)
They do not play a Conference Championship game, which, in the SEC, can be very close to the NC Game level...thus avoiding a possible loss also.
(Yes, I know, they play everyone in their conference, but in the SEC, the BEST TWO TEAMS may have to meet for a second time as well)
