re: Why do people say Ohio State "bought" this team?

Because people need to believe their team is the best possible team and anyone that is better than them is cheating or doing something unethical in some way to beat them.

I asked someone on the recruiting board awhile back why they were so convinced that LSU doesn't tamper.
It's hilarious.
Muh we just need to start cheating like everyone else, if the NCAA isn't going to stop.
People say the same in relation to holding in games.

The 20 million NIL says they out spent everyone - what else could it mean?

Does Ohio State have the highest payroll in college football?
If they do, it doesn’t matter if they paid players to come straight to Ohio State or transfer from another school. Irregardless, they still have the highest payroll.
As someone else mentioned, the Yankees and Dodgers regularly tried to outspend the competition and “buy” the best team. There is a movie about it. No one differentiates between whether a player came up in their farm system or was traded for. No, what everyone sees is the total price tag of their roster.
If Ohio State hadn’t spent all the money on existing players a number would have certainly received higher offers elsewhere and transferred. No, they paid the players they wanted to build the roster they wanted. And from all evidence they paid them more than any other team.

which was spend a lot of money to bring the guys already on the roster back for another season.
Which is smart if they’re worth it. Only way to maintain continuity and team cohesion and have an experience advantage over opponents

And if this NIL/Transfer stuff didn’t happen the starting QB for Texas last night could have been OSUs starter, so Howard wouldn’t even have been considered. Or McCord

Let me think about this because I’m not sure honestly
All 3 of the IOL should be coming back, but only 1/3 started game 1 of the season with the injuries. So that’s either 1 or 3. Tate and Smith coming back so 3 or 5 starters on offense depending on how you count it
Both tackles gone, QB and top 2 RBs likely gone Egbuka gone
Defense for sure only guy back is Downs, but I do think Styles comes back to help anchor the defense as.
So yea top 7 starters returning

Without NIL Egbuka, Henderson, Jackson, Sawyer, Simmons, Tuimoloau, Williams, Burke, and maybe Ransom/Igbinosun all go pro last year. And Judkins, Howard and Downs aren't on the team either.
The fact that many players decided not to go play in the NFL is further evidence that Ohio State NIL was spending a LOT on NIL. Enough to make players forego a NFL rookie contract.
Without that level of NIL money, at least half their starters this season would be on other college teams or in the NFL.
That is why some people are saying Ohio State bought this team.

Or another way to look at it is Ohio State is the most dominant team to come down the pike in years. no one is even close to that team.

In two of the four games I watched they didn’t look like the most dominant team in years. I watched them lose to Michigan. They looked good against Tennessee and Oregon. And last night their offense looked uber inconsistent and the game wasn’t in hand until less than 5 minutes left in the game . What makes you think they are the most dominant team in years? What makes you think no team is even close to them?

It’s not who you play it’s when you play them. They are peaking right now , well oiled machine. Very 8mportnt in the age of nil/portal.

7 is better than 5, but still tough to replace. That being said, y’all have recruited very well over the years and you should be able to adequately fill those positions.

In two of their last four games Ohio State’s offense has scored 10 points and 21 points. They have elite skill position players. But if you get Howard off his game he can derp it up.

Lol. You have to be delusional to be criticizing Ohio states offense over the last four games
Posted on 1/11/25 at 5:22 pm to Hornady7
They’re really not that well put together. They have glaring deficiencies at QB and DB/SS and their o-line isn’t dominant. Howard plays off his back foot when pressure starts getting to him and takes horrendous downfield gambles, regularly throwing into tight windows with double coverage. And their LBs aren’t agile enough to cover RB’s out of the backfield seeing as they got torched all night
A west coast or spread offense with an elite secondary and good run defense would destroy them

It’s not a new strategy for OSU either. Article from June 2022. Inflation is a bitch

Four games ago they scored 10 points against Michigan.
Posted on 1/11/25 at 5:27 pm to captdalton
3 games into the playoffs they’re averaging 40 ppg blowing out Tennessee, #1 Oregon and easily handling Texas.

20 points vs Penn State, 10 vs Michigan, and 14 vs Texas last night(screen play was a bust). All 3 teams run a 4-2-5 with disciplined dlines that stop the run and versatile secondaries that can play every type of zone
Texas WR’s were open all night, but OL failed at pass pro yet again. The dline is elite, but a spread or West coast offense with NFL caliber WR would negate them entirely bc they don’t use edges and the pass rush is too slow to get home vs quick passing attacks
