Surely he had staff in the booth telling him it wasn’t a catch.

Probably his biggest mistake of the game.

There’s so much happening they may have just accepted it as a catch without second thought. It happens

You guys are having a tough time with your cognitive dissonance pertaining your playoff worth.

He was worried about recruiting rankings and superior player development.

Honest to God I don’t think it was conclusive enough to overturn. I think it would have stood and people would have lost their damn minds

Most definitely not a catch. You are projecting. The ball was clearly rattling around in his arms and dragging along the turf.

My point was most of the UGA fans bitching are doing so cause of that play. “Why didn’t the ref review it!!?” I don’t know, why didn’t Kirby challenge it.

I don’t think any of them had time to really see it. Ball was snapped pretty damn quick after.

Saban would have called timeout to make sure they review it.

Glad he coaches for the good guys.

I guess that’s my question. If the review ref had time to stop play to look at it (as many UGA fans have claimed) how did Kirby not? That would be the first question I’d be asking the staff in my headset.

I mean there was time. Chains had to be moved, ball spotted, teams had to jog down and line back up.

Why do you think? I think he knew the refs were in Bama’s pocket and the challenge was useless.
By that point he was a beat puppy.

Like he called time out before the kick six?

I know a couple of referees, one of whom also runs the review monitors for some AAC games and has the button to page down to the officials on the field to stop the game. It’s a small circle of people that either ref or work in support roles like this and he said everyone he talked to said the review official blew it there. They are supposed to stop play any time there is any ambiguity.

Being an official himself for HS, this guy doesn’t ever throw other officials under the bus unless they are 100% wrong. They tend to take up for each other, or at least justify when there is a mistake.

The review official who makes that call in the both has a large monitor with the 4 best general camera angles and has every play on immediate replay. He should have seen enough to stop play and take a closer look.

All that said and as big of a mistake as this was, all UGA had to do was not turn the ball over and not get a stupid arse penalty that cost them a FG.

As much as I hate to say it, it is likely much more sinister than this. I know people have not forgotten that Smart used to work for Saban; they were buddies actually, not just employer and employee.

In this friendship, Saban was the alpha dog. I fear Smart may have just been afraid of challenging his friend/mentor and perhaps losing that friendship as a result.

Saban therefore used a friendship as a battering ram against Smart and basically had him "friendtimidated" into not challenging the call.

Maybe both.

ball moved on the ground but the refs still probably would have said it stood the way the calls were going.
