I'm not sure tbh.. nobody in state offered his brother either. I don't think he's got ties or is a diehard Bama fan. I think he'd probably have needed to been recruited longer if Bama was to get him. Don't think a late offer woulda done it, imo.

I think the whole thing boiled down to a talent/numbers situation.

I think Saban only wanted to take a QB this year if he was really promising because of our needs in other areas and limited offers. We offered some, and they went elsewhere, probably somewhat because we have two very good young backups on the team now.

Now Saban could offer Rivers, but that could possibly turn off the top 2012 guys that are interested in us.

Some people are worried that we will only have two scholarship QBs for 2011. But seriously, how much difference to the season is it gonna make if both McCarron and Sims end up hurt and we have a true freshman Stephen Rivers on the roster? Not much IMO.

It makes more sense to not take a QB in this class unless he is for sure top notch, and be sure to pull a top notch one next year.

2011 - Sophomore McCarron and Freshman Sims
2012 - Junior McCarron, Sophomore Sims, and RS Great Freshman
2013 - Senior McCarron, Junior Sims, and Great Freshman

Jay Barker is remembered as a winner for his time at Alabama, but he would never have played D1 football if not for the most incredibly fortuitous luck ever on the recruiting trail...

Ever heard the story on how he landed at Bama?

You have to be kidding me. Jay Barker is Greg McElroy with less talent.

Barker was just a servicable QB up until his senior year and even then he only made his name because of several 4th quarter QBs.

I dislike Brodie, but he is by far the most talented homegrown QB we've had. He has already played longer in the NFL than any QB we've had since Richard Todd.

PS - This topic just shows how much you know about the QB position.

PSS - John Parker Wilson has spent more time in the NFL than Jay Barker did.

I'm not totally sold on him staying until he's a senior.. From what i've seen, he's completely blown me away. Kid has tons of talent. That being said, if he does stay until he's a senior, i can't believe Sims went to Bama.. He was the number one quarterback and he'll start only when he's a senior.. Doesn't make much sense to me.

"the Rivers family was still upset about Alabama not recruiting Phillip."

Not true; Alabama and Auburn both offered Phillip, he was told by both programs that he would get a shot at QB but would probably wind up at DB.

The knock on Stephen Rivers is that he has that same weird throwing motion his brother has. Personally I think Bama should have offered him. I think his upside is great and I do not like the idea of having only a sophomore and a freshman as QBs on the roster next year.

I think some QB coaches are set in their ways and are not really confident they can teach a guy with a sidearm how to play the way they want them to. It appears this was the case with Malzahn and McElwain.

I think LSU got a steal here.

Then why was not Bama and Auburn listed?

Pat Sullivan is the best white QB from Alabama.

Also one of the least Deserving Heisman winners.

Sullivan was a fine passer, but he was known more for being a great winner getting Auburn to a 9-0 start. However, he had his worst performance in the biggest game of the year throwing for only 121 yards with two interceptions in a 31-7 loss to Alabama.

A sidearm or 3/4 motion can be a problem for short QB's but for a 6'6" QB, it is less of a concern. The best QB's in the NFL are the ones that adjust their arm angle depending on their surroundings.

There are rumors that Jacob Hester's friendship with older brother Phillip Rivers in San Diego played a part in Steven Rivers coming to LSU.

Wow. That pretty much eliminates 4 of the top 5 passers in your history (#1 JPW, #2Croyle, #4 Barker and #5 Scott Hunter). I won't mention the guy who finished #3, because you guys are sensitive about that topic.

So, in your humble opinion, has there ever been a QB in Alabama Crimson Tide football history who DIDN'T suck? Can you name any?

Best player in college football that year. Just seeing that the runner up was an Ivy Leaguer should tell you that.

That game was played the weekend AFTER he was awarded the Heisman.
