Just a few years ago he was in position to challenge Saban as tGOAT.

If he's done, he ended his career the winningest FBS coach of the last seventy years.

Only Knute Rockne and Frank Leahy have him beat all time.

He was a machine of a coach, but wore his gears down every 5 years.

Any team that wanted success and a massive flameout could get him and practically guarantee it.

Biggest stain was coming back in 2010, barely coaching, and adding five losses that most belong to Steve Addazio.

He's younger than Brian Kelly and I wouldn't be shocked if he did another 3 years before getting caught with a twenty three year old and quitting to spend more time with his family.

The SEC was also a much different beast from 05 to 10 than 1990 to 1996.

Spurrier by far.

Urban was the better recruiter but he coddled superstars with superstar treatment thus wasn't much of a coach to me.

Coach Spurrier is the Head Ball Coach.
He is beloved by all Gator fans

Urban Meyer had success at Florida but the way he left, what went on while was there and the stench he left, took years to go away. While recognizing his success, he will never be loved or admired by Gator fans like the HBC.

I wonder where he learned his trade?

Blaming Bryant for getting the man a job at Kentucky?

Disagree. Spurrier took over a program that had no real winning tradition. They had never won a National Championship or even an SEC title IIRC. He not only built it into a powerhouse but his style of play changed the game.
Urban inherited a pretty decent team with respect to talent, added to it and won. When the going got a little tough, he bolted.

Why, because a random fan is potentially oblivious to some dumb arse inside joke

Yeah it's a take that never works, because every kid who ever got in trouble pointed to his brother and said he was doing it too. But, it really sucks when you are given the 2nd worse punishment in NCAA history, when you know your rivals are doing the same thing. And I know from 1st hand experience, they were. UF just got reckless with it. Mainly because the Head Coach was an Alabama man, and the Recruiting Coordinator was an Auburn man and they hated each other, but knew they needed each other because they were both great at their jobs.

Close but not quite right. We won a conference title in '84, and it was stripped by the Presidents of the SEC schools, which had never happened before. Pell built the infrastructure doing all the glad-handing with the boosters that Spurrier hates to do.

The sec was much tougher during meyers tenure at Florida. LSU Uf the barn uga and then bama as soon as saban arrived were the best programs in the nation. Most of spurriers era tenner was the only other title contender in the sec. Most of the spurrier era the sec didn’t even have the top program in the nation. During the urban era the sec always had two of the top 3 programs in the nation. Sometimes more. Kentucky usce and vandy were absolute trash and uga was average in the nineties. The sec west was significantly worse in the nineties than bcs era. Urban dealt with richt not goof, the best usce era in their history, Franklin at vandy, jumbo at fsu, and monsters from the west. Urban is the better coach, spurrier is charamastic, the native son, and will always be more popular.

All true. But I don't think Urban would have done any better at UF if he had been the coach during Spurrier's time there either. He might have another title or two because of his recruiting, but I don't think he would have had a better overall record. Urban didn't have to deal with peak FSU and Miami like Spurrier did.

It was undoubtedly spurrier. Spurrier dominated not just the SEC but all of CFB for a decade. If it weren't for FSU's run at the same time UF woudl absolutley have put together a bama/saban-like dynasty of their own.

The SEC in 06 wasn't close to what we think of now. His biggest competition in 2006 was a solid LSU squad and...well that's about it. Arkansas lloked good in the standins but had 4 friggin losses. AU was ranked ok but they kinda sucked and were exposed by an awful UGA team. In 2007 he lost 4 games. 2008 was great, no debate. Then when saban rose to prominence urban realized fun time was over and he quit.

Spurrier was more consistent. Florida failed to win at least 10 games in half of Meyer's seasons at Florida. Georgia won the East twice when he was there and South Carolina once.

Can't take away from his two national titles, however. That was quite an accomplishment.

If I had a program already established and near-championship level, I'd hire Urbs. Every other circumstance, I'd take the Ol' Ball Coach.

FSU come out in prominence? Ever heard of Bobby Bowden? He had FSU in the top 5 for 14 years in a row.
A record of 316-97 from 1976-2000.
