Georgia has always had great in-State talent but you’ve always had Alabama, Auburn, and Clemson dipping in to steal some recruits. Seems like that isn’t happening under Kirby as much. But why are players that could start at Auburn or Clemson going to UGA to sit for a couple years?

Clemson? So, you think we are that much better than Clemson?

Auburn is coming off a season in which they were screaming for their coach to be fired earlier. Recruits absolutely do see those things. Auburn was also getting a lot of attention from recruits after they beat us in the first game....so is it so surprising the recruits turned towards Georgia after we are going to the playoffs?

Georgia would have won the East this year with Gene Chizik coaching.

How did I miss a comment so stupid? Not even richt would have been a lock to win a weak east.

Mark couldn't manage his roster.

We were usually weak along the OLine, and little depth at DLine.

His players might of liked him but they had zero fear of him. The arrest record from his days speaks volumes.

Most of the kids got into trouble over minor things. Very few major arrests, if any.

Things are never as bad or good ss they appear.

Kirby has done a great job, but he also benefited from a very weak SECe and hasn’t had coaching turnover.

Let’s see how he does with his 2nd wave of coaching hires, how he handles a season with high expectations, and if he can keep his players hungry.

I agree it's to early to say Kirby is a great hire, but it isn't hard to see he is doing things right. The kids that signed in December were not only highly rated, but they also play critical positions. A 5 star DE can make a LB and DT better. That is way more important than a 5 star WR who still needs someone to throw him the ball.

The coaching turnover is a fair point, but Kirby seems genuinely liked and respected in the coaching community. I suspect he'll get others to coach with him when he starts to experience turnover.

Here is a key. As much as I loved Richt, our OLine was a weak area that was under recruited.

I do, too, but it is more than getting coaches to coach with him...it's getting the right coaches. He did well with round 1, but the future could be tougher as his first choices leave.

UGA's talent level fell off toward the end of the Richt years

No doubt the talent level fell off in regards to the '15 and '16 teams but recruiting picked up considerably
in '14,'15 and '16 with Pruit coming on board.

Georgia is not Ole Miss. We never struggled to recruit. We can sit on our arse and sign top 10 recruiting classes.

Kirby is locking down the state of UGA. Ole Miss was getting 5 stars from all over the country. Multiple years we were in for quite a bit of 5 stars. Finally we didn't come up short. Kirby was a great recruiter at Alabama. Justin Fields will play next year and have special packages for him. The OL we got want to play for Pittman.

He's coaching one of the other teams in the playoffs.

We have more talent within 80 miles of our campus than
any other school in the SEC including Florida and A&M.

Edit:I'm not comparing the states just talent within an
80 mile radius from each SEC campus.

I'm with you OP. The first game I saw a Kirby Smart coached UGA team was when they came to Oxford in 2016. That Ole Miss team wasn't very good but they beat the absolutely brakes off of that UGA team and could've picked the final score. I hadn't seen an SEC team this inept and incapable of doing anything about the asswhooping they were getting since 2011 Ole Miss. Not sure what Kirby and staff did in the offseason but I'm assuming he got a mentorship from someone

Gwinnett county alone could field a D1 team. Unreal the talent there

No doubt, plenty of talent in Dekalb as well but coaching is much better in Gwinnett.

The difference is easy to see
Senior leadership in 2016? 1 (grad transfer that followed Kirby from alabama).
Senior leadership in 2017? Both lines of scrimmage. Tailbacks and linebackers. 1 WR and several DBs.

5 star freshmen don't get you this far. It takes upper class men.

Ole miss was really good at the time of that game.

Year 2 bump is a real thing with many examples. Talent was also upgraded at all positions.
