I think LSU's improved offense will actually benefit our defense even more. Loss of Brandon Taylor is the biggest loss for our defense IMO. I think we have the best defensive line in the league though and everything starts upfront. I think Alabama may be a statistical leader in total yardage given up or points per game, but I think LSU will be a bigger play defense with more takeaways. How you want to score that is up to you.

Ummm no. Oregon will never, ever have a defense on the level of LSU and Alabama as long as Kelly is coach. Is their defense good? Sure. But it's not at that level. LSU/Bama put a huge emphasis on defensive depth. Both put their best players on defense. Kelly, on the other hand, puts his best players on offense. Unless Kelly changes his scheme and starts putting his better players on defense, there's no way Oregon's D will be on the same level as LSU and Bama.

Kelly is putting players on defense. Armstead is playing SDE and not OT. Kelly flipped our best athlete in Jordan from TE to OLB.

ETA: He is putting a huge emphasis on the dline.

A few of his prediction from last season:

1) State would beat Auburn by 21 +
2) Chris Relf would put up Heisman numbers
3) State would split one between LSU/Alabama

So, yeah, Coonassbulldog is a lttle looney...

Only because Armstead is stuck on playing defensive end, for some reason...

He'd be a much better offensive tackle for Oregon.

Armstead is the perfect SDE in our system. The reports out of spring practice mirror the excitement of DAT last fall. He was throwing guys around like rag dolls.

Did it look anything like the way all of LSU's defensive players threw them around?

Must be nice not playing Oregon or West Virginia level offenses.

They're scheduled bastard.

Oregon put up 19 on the big stage against a mid level SEC defense

Please don't pretend like LSU schedules OOC juggernauts every year

Yes. It's still impressive that a EE true frosh is doing that.

I was really impressed with Logan in that game. I was thinking, "what the hell, isn't he #4 on the depth chart at DT?"

A defense like BAMA/LSU is the pinnacle, right?

I would like to see Oregon play against a 2nd tier team like UGA or USCe to see if the SEC is BAMA/LSU and the rest or really the best top to bottom.

UF? Bama? LSU? UGA? Those teams will have defenses that stand out with USCe also having a top notch unit. I think Bama has had the best statistical defense in the conference for the last three years. It's what wins championships for sure.

1a. Alabama
1b. LSU
3. Georgia
4. Florida
5. USCe

I think Georgia will be the best statistically because of their schedule. Alabama and LSU will have the best all around units.

Florida, USCe, and Miss St. will all have solid units that they rely on to win games.

The conference is the best top to bottom.

Conf Champs:
2011 - LSU
2010 - Auburn
2009 - Alabama
2008 - Florida
2007 - LSU
2006 - Florida
2005 - Georgia

That's 5 different champs in 7 years, and 6 of those teams played for national titles with 5 winning. That's depth.

My point isn't whether the SEC is the best conference. That is indisputable.

Oregon faced USCw, Stanford and Wisconsin. All of those teams had very respectable defenses. My point is whether a team like UGA holds Oregon to less than USCw team.

Some poster here act like no one is playing defense out of the conference. I am saying you remove LSU/BAMA and the rest look like another BCS conference top to bottom.

UF finished last season ranked in the top 10 in total defense in the NCAA.

I expect UF to have the third best defense in the SEC this season after Bama and LSU.

"State has finished 3rd and 4th in the SEC the last 2 years in scoring D- and this will be the best defense we've had under Mullen. We may even outplay Florida for 3rd"

quote:

You are out of your damn mind.

State was better in Scoring D than Fla last season
State had more interceptions
State had more fumble recoveries
State was better in Pass Efficiency D

State returns 8 starters, and adds a 5* juco DE to upgrade another position- Florida returns 10

I'd say there is a good chance we could be the SEC's 3rd best defense
