Saban is better, easily.

While Florida thrived in a weak Southeastern Conference, they consistently struggled against Florida State. Spurrier left the Gators with a losing record to Bobby Bowden's program. There were years in the 90s where Florida would be tops in the conference but would also be the third best team in the state of Florida (behind FSU and Miami).

I think he was 5-8 against FSU and Bowden, but FSU was incredible when Spurrier got to UF. FSU went on a 14-year streak of finishing in the top 4. That's amazing. Yes, they lost to FSU in a close one and then beat them 52-20 in the national championship, but Florida was the SEC Champ at least.

I do think Saban is the best though.

And if you'd quoted the entire sentence, you wouldn't have to guess. Ain't that something?

Edit: Sorry about the sarcasm, but, really, this sort of reply is cheap and deserves all the eye-rolls one can muster.

Yeah, when talking about Spurrier's success, it's important to keep in mind that the FSU of his era was a brutal opponent to have every single year. Until recently, a good case could be made for that being the greatest "dynasty" in the history of CFB. It's like saying someone went 5-8 against Saban and Bama...it's a losing record, but a damned good effort considering the opponent.

As an Auburn fan I pull against Saban every week, but he is the best coach in CFB.

Maybe not the best game day coach, but the best recruiter and player developer as well as program manager.

I hope he retires soon.

LSU was actually a very similar program to South Carolina before Saban's arrival.

LSU's ten year record before Saban's arrival

54-58-1 .482 winning percentage (62nd in country)

South Carolina's ten year record before Spurrier's arrival

49-64-1 .434 winning percentage (83rd in country)

And that's with a 21 game losing streak dragging down USC's numbers.

Oh and Florida was a much better program in 1990 when Spurrier was hired than Bama was in 2006 before Saban's arrival.

Florida's record from 1980-1989

76-38-3 .662 winning percentage (22nd in country)

Alabama's record from 1997-2006

67-55 .549 winning percentage (47th in country)

You know what, my apologies. I was in a hurry and read your reply wrong. Be as sarcastic as you want. My bad.

Only similarity between the two is that they both quit on teams during the season.

Spurrier - Big edge when it comes to offensive X's and O's.

Saban - Big edge every where else.

Saban wins overall by a country mile.

OBC is probably the most overrated coach in the history of college football. Spent the last almost 15 seasons being close to insignificant.

Saban is the best college football coach of all time because he has built a dynasty in much more difficult and competitive time than the oldies.

He's only slightly overrated. He's a great coach, no question about it.

It's hard to judge him for not winning championship at South Carolina, I mean, that's a tall order. The level he got them too is pretty impressive, specially considering it was at the tail end of his career.

So great coach, but certainly not better than Saban. I mean, I think at best you could argue Spurrier is a top 5 all time SEC coach (which is still pretty awesome).

Dumb article. Dumb thread.

Saban is better. Spurrier has his own awesome accomplishments, Saban has better ones.

Yes, fundamentally it's silly arguing about two future hall of famers.

Using Alabama and South Carolina to troll insecure Vol fans?

You seem to have taken the hook.

Maybe for those 10 years, but the ceiling has always been higher at LSU. LSU tied for 1st in the West and won 10 games with DiNardo three years before Saban took over. He just made the dumbest defensive coordinator hire ever. South Carolina hasn't won a conference title in 46 years.

What? He had three top 10 finishes (including one top 4 finish) in his last five years of coaching at a school that has an all-time winning % of 51%. Spurrier is the winningest coach ever at two schools (UF and South Carolina). He was even ACC coach of the year twice in 3 years at Duke (yes - Duke). He wasn't overrated.

Saban is awesome and is the best - no doubt. However, I believe Spurrier was the last SEC coach to beat Bama and Saban by double digits (back in 2010, South Carolina beat them by 14).

L5U was Arkansas before Saban.

Spurrier is great, but this is a ridiculous discussion. Saban has 5 national titles at two different schools including 4 in 7 years. He is the GOAT.
