Wonder why they hired him for then ? Really didn’t give him a fair chance imo … not saying it was going to work but if they thought he was the guy then why not give him 4 years ? Firing guys every two years works out well for Texas .

He was hired because he took Texas to the elite 8 as a interim HC. No AD is going to let the coach walk after that. He earned the job.

Since, he has regressed every year. Went from elite 8 to R32 to First 4.

That's not exactly the trajectory you want to see.

Not really. I hate this logic because it fails 99% of the time. Dabo is the only example I can think of where hiring the interim on a permanent basis worked out.

Whether it fails or doesn't most of the time is besides the point. If your interim HC takes you further than any HC has in 10 years, you're not letting them walk.

Was it the wrong hire? Yes.

Were CDC's hands tied? also yes.

You absolutely do if you’re an AD like Texas. It will be a “bad look” for 20 minutes and then everyone will forget about it

Can you point to another time in the history of college basketball that an interim HC won their conference championship and lead the team to at least the elite 8, and was replace after the season?

Interesting to know if the Cal rumor is true

Smart people don't burn bridges with billionaires.

Tyson has spent the last 20 years trying to get Cal to Arkansas and put up a ton of money to get him here now. Cal isn't stupid enough to burn that bridge to go to a school like Texas.

I would be willing to bet no program has ever been in a position exactly like that

Honestly without Wade Taylor Buzz has not done a whole lot while there

This way of thinking is always a terrible take, plus lets not act like Wade is going in the 1st round of the draft.

Kobe Bryant/Jordan Phil
Melo Boeheim
Noah/Brewer/Horford Donovan

Then dismiss the conference championship and just focus on making it to the elite 8... Hell, even the sweet 16.

To be fair, Rodney didn’t earn the job bc of an Elite 8 appearance. He got to an Elite 8 using Beard’s talent, that could have probably gone farther if Beard had not left. It was a lazy hire to give him credit for Beard’s team and talent.

Many, many Texas fans argued this at the time.

I think Texas prioritized avoiding the screeching of media personalities chastising the school for not hiring a black man who took them further than they’d been in 15 years.

Maybe it was the right decision. What’s 2 years of mediocrity in a history of mediocrity, vs. being a “racist” program.

I agree, it was a lot more about optics. I rarely meet Texas Basketball fans that believed this was actually a good hire. No one even cameback to eat crow on surlyhorns.

Beards team and "talent" had 0 players that were drafted on it. Beard is by far a better coach than Terry, but saying they made that appearance from "Beards team and talent" is pretty wrong IMO.

I'm not trying to defend Terry because obviously the hire didn't workout, but he more than earned that job from his post season accomplishments.

No disrespect intended but I don't think Texas has the basketball tradition to lure Cal.
He's got millions of Tyson dollars at his disposal at Arkansas and studs already signed for next year. Future is bright and he doesn't seem like he would have many years left in the tank anyway.

I feel like Texas will go after someone proven but still with some gas in the tank like Oates or Painter or someone else along those lines.
