Say you are a fan of a school with a rich football tradition but (for this season at least) the handwriting is on the wall and there is no way your team is going to make the CFP even in a 12 or 14 team format.

So, which of the bowl games should your program aspire to, who do you want to extend an invite to your team? There are more than 30 of them, surely one of them must be able to generate some enthusiasm amongst your team's fanbase.

I would kind of like to see Oklahoma play (and win, of course) one of the bowls the Sooners have never been to before such as:

Pop-Tarts Bowl . . .It is played in Orlando and the winning team gets to tear off chunks of a huge fresh-out-of-toaster Pop Tart!

Bahamas Bowl . . . An abysmally small payout but the location is like no other and there should be plenty of tickets available.

Then there are the ones I would prefer to never see OU participate:

Famous Idaho Potato Bowl . . . Blue turf and Boise, Idaho? No thanks.

Duke's Mayo Bowl . . . I do not want to see the Sooner head coach doused in mayonnaise.

If the weather is right any bowl in the South is good.

Independence Bowl sucks no matter what, because Shreveport.

The Birmingham Bowl is also a uniquely miserable experience.

I know Texas fans get tired of them, but the Alamo Bowl/Holiday Bowl were great for Texas.

Alamo Bowl is close. And it’s typically a good, raucous crowd of locals from San Antonio who don’t usually get to see Texas play.

Holiday Bowl because it’s close for me and a lot of Southern California Horns. And there are a lot of us.

You also usually got a solid pac10 or big10 opponent.

It seems like they would. And yet, last year was a great year for bowls:

quote:

The 2024-25 college football bowl season on ESPN platforms saw remarkable growth, drawing significant increases in viewership across key demographics. The 33 non-College Football Playoff bowls averaged 2.7 million viewers, marking a 14 percent year-over-year increase and the largest audience since the 2019-20 season. Gains were particularly notable among viewers aged 18-49, with a 21 percent rise in that demographic. Fourteen of the 33 bowls achieved at least a five-year high in viewership, with five reaching ten-year highs. Notably, the Alamo Bowl attracted 8 million viewers, making it the most-watched non-CFP/New Year’s Six bowl on any network in five years. Meanwhile, the ReliaQuest Bowl drew 6.5 million viewers, earning the distinction of cable’s most-watched non-CFP bowl in nine years.

I had fun watching the games this past year. They’re meaningless. But the kids still care and it’s better than anything else on tv.

I wonder if it’s better since they moved it to Protective. Lot more to do in that area of town.

Independence Bowl by far! It actually depresses me to see the games now. When I was a kid in Shreveport, the games Independence Bowl from 2002-2009 would sell out and be packed. You'd get some good games like TAMU vs UGA or LSU vs ND or Bama vs Ok St or OU vs Ole Miss.

Most recent was Texas Tech vs Cal, which it could be worse I guess, but the attendance is completely gone. I'm guessing TV or lower quality matchup is the reason why, or just how bad the Indy Bowl appearance and niceness is vs other more recent stadiums. Probably a combo of all 3. I wonder if other Bowl games have had as big of an attendance decline as the Indy Bowl.

The Sun Bowl is one of the coolest stadiums in the country.

CBS has been broadcasting this bowl for 57 consecutive years.

El Paso, Texas

Although there’s no SEC tie in…it’s the Alamo Bowl. Hell, tie ins may be done soon.

Alamo doesn’t share a time slot, plays in a good size dome, always power conference teams, and has asses in the seats. I can’t think of another bowl that consistently has some of the best attendance and ratings year to year. Even in the CFP expanded era, it’ll still be a fun watch.

The greatest TV moment in the Sun Bowl happened a few years back when the camera man found that young Mexican girl up sitting up on the mountain with her hand in her boyfriend's pants... yankin' his crank... and the TV producer actually stayed with the shot. It was hilarious.
