Outside of Mardis Gras is NO really a tourist attraction or LA period. Maybe i am just used to things here.
New Orleans---
#1 Large convention city in the south (including ATL)
- More Super Bowls than any southern city (Miami)
- Many final 4's in baskeyball
- Numerous national championships in football
- Sugar Bowl
- Home of professional football, basketball and AAA baseball (bama does have minor league baseball)
- Professional golfers tour (Zurich Open)
- AAA Baseball
- Gambling Casinos
- Historic Fair Grounds, still a huge draw
- Jazz Fest
- Mardi Gras
- Incredible fresh and saltwater fishing
Incredible hunting, including Algiers/NO East
(just kidding)
Nah, nothing goes on there.
You could take all the beaches, golf courses, cities in Alabama and combine them, and NOLA would easily outdraw them.
As would Louisiana.
I like alabama, but besides that narrow strip of beaches and golf... well, there's not much.
Yep, your used to over there. Not that there's anything wrong with that. I live near the mountains these days, ready to relax in a couple more years.

How can anyone talk shite about new orleans? You people are lame if you dont like N.O.

new orleans has its problems but imo the good out weights that by alot.

you should add a world class zoo and aquarium to that list as well.

Really? I think the AL beaches are a much better draw and place to go than NOLA.
Would you ever want to live in NOLA? Would you ever want to live on the AL Gulf Coast? Answer honestly.
I have lived on the AL gulf coast (in OB) and it is a GREAT place to live. I have visted NOLA about a dozen times. It is a fun weekend when I was living on the gulf coast and wanted to party.
If you think NOLA is a better place to be, fine. But if I took a total stranger to both (say someone from Ohio), I would bet that most of the time that person would prefer the AL Gulf Coast as a place to live over NOLA.

I enjoy NO when I visit and really like to go there. However, as I said, it would be way way down on my lists of places I want to live.

I'd take that bet. I've actually MET peopel from Ohio at the BCS title game, and they all loved NOLA.
It's all about the food.
There's a REASON they call Coastal Alabama "The Redneck Riviera".

You would lose that bet. Like I said of course they loved it. It was a trip to an event in a town that is fun to party in. I love it when I visit. I have spent weekends there, gambled there, been to big games there, been to Mardi Gras, spent New Year's there, etc.
However, my statement was a better place to live. I would bet there are more people from outside the south that move to the gulf coast to live, retire, buy second homes, and so on and so forth (i.e. move to live) than NOLA. Period.

They shouldn't be living on that coast in the first place. It costs the taxpayers millions of dollars in federal assistance to rebuild those retirement homes after every hurricane season.
It's a crock. So much for "better place to live".
At least NOLA has a reason to be there, IE one of the biggest ports in the world. The " Redneck Riviera" exists just so some gray on the head, red on the neck couple can can stay home and get sunburned at the beach instead of driving to it.

The Gulf Coast is a damn nice place to live. As is South Florida. Living near or on the water is not too bad. Maybe you do not like the beach, but if not for all those investors, condo's, and second homes, the residents of LA would have no nice beach to drive to in the summer when they decide to vacation and innundate the "Red Neck Riveria".

I would pick Baton Rouge over Auburn easily. I've actually lived in Baton Rouge and loved it.
As for the New Orleans trash talk, someone needs to wise up. NOLA is an amazing city. I grew up in South Mississippi and South Alabama, and spent many summers in New Orleans, as my pops worked for Shell, and had a place in New Orleans. As beautiful as the beaches are on the Alabama Gulf Coast, as well as the Florida beaches, not to mention all of the other great things Alabama or Florida Panhandle have to offer, New Orleans is the easy choice for a get-away. I think the number of events, and amount of tourists that flock there, make it hard to ignore the significance of this city now, and historically.
Getting off subject, New Orleans has been kind to Alabama football too. Most of the National Championships Alabama has won came in that city. So, Alabama, as far as the football fans are concerned, have always had a tie to that wonderful city.

Uh...I've lived in both. Hell Mobile is my hometown, but I find Baton Rouge much more enjoyable of a place to live.

I guess you're saying that because there's a big college there? Personally, I like Mobile better.

LSU is a nice influence on the town yes. Probably the reason I like it more, USA doesn't have near the effect on the town LSU does here.
I love Mobile, but I really don't want to live there again.

quote:I love beach towns to visit each summer, but comparing Gulf Shores/Orange Beach to a worldwide known city such as New Orleans is laughable. Throughout the 1700s, 1800s, and 1900s, this world famous city was known for its charm, jazz, hospitality, and much more. New Orleans was the overall favorite city chosen in America to host Superbowls if it came down to just one city. New Orleans metro population in the 1990s was above 1.6 million. If the only New Orleans you know of is Katrina and post Katrina, then you never really knew New Orleans. You claim there is an exodus to GS/OB but 5,000 and 3,000 people in these towns is not enough evidence to support your claim to GS/OB being this mecca for people dying to live there. With that said, I do like Gulf Shores/Orange Beach as well as Biloxi/Gulfport, MS and Galveston, TX. I do know some people that prefer Holly Beach.

First of all, anybody that says New Orleans sucks must have absolutely no soul.
Second...comparing Auburn to Baton Rouge is silly. Auburn is a small college town, fairly rural. Baton Rouge is the state capital of Louisiana and has approximately 700,000 more residents. I love Baton Rouge, I always have a good time there, but I wouldn't want to live there. Why? because it's too big for me, I like small, rural Alabama. If the big city is your gig, more power to you.

Baton Rouge is really spread out. It is a city, but definitely doesn't have a big city feel.
Baton Rouge is not as unique as New Orleans, but I would say the culture of south Louisiana is way better than that of anywhere in Alabama. If you want to talk about some of the state issues maybe Alabama would win some, but the culture of the people is way better.

Neither should brag about inner city education or crime stats.
I have a condo near the campus. Lived in the Garden District off of Cato in the 1980s. Not all was perfect, some businesses were down right ratty looking....
But some of those hell holes have the best food around.
George's...for example, great bar the po boys are fantastic there.
An it's under a interstate bridge.
