Blame the saints all you want. Referees won the game for Carolina. Prove me wrong. Two defensive pass int. Counts for 1 team not the other. As expected, EVERY penalty in last 5 minutes went against one team. Obvious horse collar in the open just ignored. Easy holding calls not called on panthers. How does one team get every favorable call in last 5 minutes? Blatant cheating.

Because their loss was earlier in the season. That’s poll “logic”. It’s not a reasonable way of ranking teams, but it is what the polls have always done. It wasn’t unique to this situation.

We can agree to agree with this. There's no perfect system. I think the BCS did exactly what it was design to do. Pick the 2 best teams with the best resume and that's exactly what it did. If it would have chosen the 11-1 team with a weaker SOS over a 12-1 team with a stronger SOS then we can agree the system failed. I remember the media, without ANY opposition, criticizing the BCS for being a failure. The BCS was 100% accurate and later scrapped because the bias of the media didn't have their darling playing in the national champion game. The AP voters proved they have issues with their judgement and character. There are names and labels to describe people like these voters. Here's a few - cheaters for deliberately ignoring the obvious.....Best record vs best SOS vs best common opponent argument...the team that cannot win that argument was chosen CHAMPION. .... Incompetent....for the same reasons as mention above.
quote:

They played Oklahoma, Georgia 2x, Ole Miss, and Florida. That’s 5. If you go by game rank, you just swap Florida and Auburn.

I did confuse Florida and Auburn's ranking at respected times. I still stand by my argument if you may that one team played one hell of a lot of AP ranked teams than the other, 4 to 1 before the bowls or 5 to 2 after the bowls.
quote:

How am I exaggerating

By claiming they played 7 games against ranked opponents when they only played 5.
Playing ranked opponents at a 4 to 1 or 5 to 2 ratio is not exaggerating sos.
quote:

We agree they were wrong in that evaluation, but it wasn’t inconsistency or a conspiracy.

I remember hearing the Kansas City sports writer on ESPN claiming LSU was better but voting for USC. I still don't get where one team has NO argument, 11-1 vs 12-1 before bowl or 12-1 vs 13-1 after bowl, or SOS(BCS), SOS(polls), or worst loss, or common opponents, etc. The team that can't win any of these arguments was chosen over the team that wins everyone of these arguments.

quote:

They selected USC #1 because they had USC ranked #1 headed into the bowls and had ranked USC ahead of LSU every week since the Florida loss.

Headed into the bowls, USC has only played 1 AP ranked team, Wash St, and even lost to an unranked team. OU has played 4 AP ranked teams and LSU played 5 AP ranked teams, both OU and LSU had better records and better sos according to both the AP poll and BCS formula. So why was USC ranked ahead of 2 teams with a better resume at that point?
quote:

The AP Poll

Team A) Final record 12-2 Played 5 AP ranked teams, 3-2 vs AP, 0 losses vs unranked, SOS #11 (BCS)
Team B) Final record 13-1 Played 6 AP ranked teams, 5-1 vs AP, 0 losses vs unranked, SOS #29
Team C) Final record 12-1 Played 2 AP ranked teams, 2-0 vs AP, 1 loss vs unranked, SOS #37

AP chooses Team C as their champion, The team that played less AP ranked teams, the team that beat less AP ranked teams, the team that lost to an unranked team, the team that played the easiest schedule of the 3 according to their poll and the BCS formula. Seems to me they disrespected and showed how worthless their AP poll was.
quote:

LSU played 5 games against AP ranked opponents (only 4 based on ranking at game time). I’m not sure where you are coming up with 7.

For some reason, I had Auburn ranked, so i gave both LSU and USC extra credit for each playing an extra ranked team. LSU played 6 games against the final AP ranked teams (5 based on ranking at game time) and USC played only 2 games against the final AP ranked teams (2 based on ranking at game time). These corrected adjustments even favors LSU more now.

quote:

I agree 100% that LSU played a tougher schedule and should have been ranked higher, but you are exaggerating the strength of their schedule.

How am I exaggerating, Every poll including the AP and every computer model along with the BCS formula suggested that LSU's SOS was better.

quote:

Playing a tougher schedule in and of itself does not make a team better if the other team is more dominant.

In what universe was USC more dominant? LSU's record was better, LSU's SOS was better, LSU's loss was better losing to a team that the AP ranked in their final AP poll as opposed to USC losing to a team that didn't receive even ONE vote from any AP voter. Both teams had 2 common opponents in which LSU beat both teams by a larger margin. So how was USC more dominant when USC has NO argument suggesting they were better?
quote:

Oklahoma lost to K-State 35-7. USC was peaking in December and had a fluke loss to Cal in September. It was just a ridiculous outcome.
1) OU 12-1 had a better record than USC 11-1
2) OU's SOS was better than USC's.
3) OU's lost was to a RANNKED CONFERENCE CHAMPION. USC lost to an UNRANKED team.
What criteria would allow USC over OU?
quote:

The BCS not pairing LSU and USC in 2003 was the biggest blunder I've ever seen in college football.
Not even close. OU and LSU both had better records vs better SOS. What criteria would have allowed USC to jump either one of those teams?
quote:

This is such bull shite coping nonsense. USC was #1 in the AP going into the bowls and won, why would they drop?
Maybe if the AP voters RESPECTED their own poll, then they could of USED their poll and chose their champion based on the team that played 7 AP ranked teams and beat 6 AP ranked teams instead of giving it to a team that played 3 AP ranked teams and lost to a NON RANKED team. They SERIOUSLY IGNORED THEIR POLL
quote:

USC was screwed out of the game.
USC was not screwed out of the game. Both OU and LSU had better record vs better SOS. What criteria would have made USC more deserving of OU and LSU?

quote:

They have every right to claim the AP title.
Honestly they don't. LSU played 7 of 14 games against THE AP RANKED TEAMS. USC played 3 of 13 games against THE AP RANKED TEAMS and lost to a team that did not get ONE SINGLE VOTE from the AP voters. Seems to me the AP VOTERS IGNORED THEIR VERY OWN POLL to crown their champion.

re: If Saban Never Came to LSU...

by Salviati. Excellent post.
There’s always these 2 questions “Did Saban make LSU?” or “Did LSU make Saban?”. Answer to the first question. No. Before Saban, LSU already had a very respectable history. With the disastrous 90’s, LSU was still a top 15 historical program. Minus that aberration called the 90’s, LSU is top 12. Dinardo with great coordinates put LSU back on the map and the state of Louisiana was ranked #1 in high school talent when dinardo was let go and Saban was hired.
Answer to question #2. Yes. Any coach hiring Saban at the time was taking a chance on a coach that went 6-5-1 with a bowl lost to a 6-4-1 team. Saban’s hire at LSU couldn’t have been more perfect as Salviati already poited out with Mark Emmett’s plan and Louisiana’s #1 ranked hs talent that year. Saban won the lottery with that scenario. His desire to coach in the nfl led him to win his second lottery. His hire at Alabama came at just the perfect time when the state of Alabama had the #1 rank hs talent that year. Couple that with his ties to Louisiana hs coaches and the tremendous advantage he will benefit from the SEC office, then that’s the blueprint to his success. Saban will go down as the greatest college coach ever. I hope this brings some light to the “who mad who?” debate. Just remember, it was the historical top 15 program who’s 6-4-1 team beat bad the coach of a team with an identical 6-4-1 record that took the chance.
As someone mentioned earlier, we’re devolving instead of evolving. A great tradition taken away because of ridiculous claims. Yeah I’ll say it. Texas, Colorado, Florida St, Auburn, USC, Oklahoma, UGA, and everyone else can keep their traditions with their animals entertaining thousands of people, but LSU can’t. It was fine before. It’s still fine at other schools. If the concern is fireworks, get rid of the fireworks. If it’s noise from the crowd, put him in a soundproof enclosure. Problem is, people or groups that have no business speaking for how the majority thinks are having their way. You know these people. Statues are offensive. Male athletes can win 1st place in women’s events. Border protection are important for other countries, not ours. How bout this, I’m sure 99% of Americans were not offended with the pretty little Indian girl on “Land O Lakes” butter, but she’s no longer there because some how it was offensive. Kudos to Florida St for not caving in to name change. The Seminole Indians love it. Get this, [The Washington Commanders are being sued by The Native American Guardians Association, which has been trying to get the Commanders to change the name back to Redskins.
The lawsuit states:
“The logo on the Redskin’s helmet is an actual person, it’s Chief White Calf. Every time they go out on that field, they were honoring Chief White Calf and they were battling on the football field with the same honor and integrity and courage. They should continue to honor that.”]. My point again, people or groups making wrong decisions for the majority shouldn’t have their way. What’s right at Colorado should also be right at LSU. What’s right at FSU should also be right at Washington DC.
quote:

If a team can’t make it to the top 16 they really have no business playing for a national championship anyway.

With the new changes coming in 2024 with teams leaving conferences for others, im not sure how man we will have. As of the 2023 season, there are 10 conferences and 133 teams. Just have a format for all 10 conference champions and 6 wildcards play for the NC. The regular season did what it was supposed to do to give us a platform where every conf champion along with the 6 wildcards play for the national title.
I just have the feeling if it was LSU in this scenario, the talking heads would make it a talking point of taking a playoff spot from FSU or LSU shouldn't be allowed to play with a possibility of vacating the 3 wins they were accused of spying on. If the investigation is no longer ongoing, then just ignore this post.

re: Why no playoffs?Posted on 8/3/08

15 years ago, I felt like the ONLY true NATIONAL champion could only be acheived if every conference had representation. The BCS formula was the correct system for a 2 team playoff. With 130+ teams and 11 conferences, its too small of a sample size for a 2 or 4 team playoff. the nfl has a 14 team playoff for 32 teams. Which ever team goes 4-0 in this playoff deserve to be THE TRUE NATIONAL CHAMPION if its the sunbelt or SEC representative. These were the top teams of 2008 when this example was made. If I have time, I will insert the 2023 teams to this format.

Wrong. The AP was recognized as one of the two legitimate polls that could declare a national champion at the time. They won the AP Poll and we won the Coaches Poll.

USC was a legitimate national champion that year. It’s not their fault that they finished the regular season #1 in all polls and still got excluded from the championship game. The Coaches Poll made us their champion because their contract with the BCS required it. However, most people outside of LSU felt like USC was the better team.

Tonight, we AP voters have to vote. First let's look at the teams, their overall records, their wins, their losses, their opponents, their SOS, their common opponents, their margin of victory, their most impressive win.......did I leave anything out? Oh yeah, I almost forgot, we're AP voters and we rank teams as well, so we can use our VERY OWN POLL and RANKINGS as a gauge to determine who's best as well as the other criteria. Let's pick our #1.......

USC 12-1 LSU 13-1
We keep hearing that LSU has the better record vs better teams. Let's see how they fared against OUR POLL before we crown them OUR CHAMPION.

USC played 13 games and only 3 against our top AP top 30 teams, let's look at LSU. WOW. LSU played 7 of our very own AP top 30 teams.....That's half of their schedule against the teams we, the AP, are saying are the best in America. USC beat only 3 of our top 30 teams. LSU beat 6 of our top 30 teams. The BCS, as flawed as it is, agrees that LSU's SOS is better than USC's. Let's look at their losses. USC lost to WHO? Who is Cal? Are they even ranked in our AP rankings? No they are not. Well LSU's only loss was to one of our ranked teams. Ok. We understand if you don't bring your "A" game against one of our top AP teams, it's possible you could lose against one of OUR ranked teams, but loosing to unranked Cal? Well, we, the AP voters, are making progress and agree with the BCS on SOS....gotta be all our AP teams LSU is playing...yeah. Let's find out if these 2 have common opponents. Joe said both played Auburn and Arizona.

LSU beat both common opponents by larger margin and in a much more impressive manner. Is that true, Jim? Let's see, LSU was up 31-0 in the 3rd qrt vs Auburn and allowed the backups to mop up were as USC had to keep their 1st teamers in the entire game for 23-0 win. Stats don't lie and LSU had better margin of victory vs both common opponents...Another argument USC cannot win. Heck USC has nothing over LSU as of yet. Mark May and Trev Alberts keep saying USC has "blown out" the competition. Maybe there some truth to that, since we, the AP, did some research and found out that 10 of USC's 13 games were not against our AP top teams. Well, time to vote for our AP champion.

Overall record - LSU
SOS - LSU
Common opponents - LSU
played vs our AP poll - LSU
won vs our AP poll - LSU
voted our AP champion - USC

The stupid idiots IGNORED THEIR VERY OWN POLL to crown their champion. The stupid idiots demonstrated that their poll, THEIR POLL, THEIR POLL, THEIR POLL, was useless, meaningless, irrelevant, and worthless to crown their champion. While ignoring their own poll, these idiots also ignored overall best record vs their SOS and everyone elses SOS. This speaks volumes about the integrity of these corrupt cheaters and if not for the BCS which did pick the TWO best teams, LSU would have been cheated out of a NC. I'll say it again....Pathetic, they couldn't even use THEIR OWN FRICKIN POLL to crown THEIR champion.
