Kind of interesting
1. LSU - Ed Orgeron (D-Line coach/interim head coach, LSU)
2. Ohio State - Ryan Day (Offensive Coordinator/interim head coach, Ohio State)
3. Clemson - Dabo Swinney (WR Coach/interim head coach, Clemson)
4. Georgia - Kirby Smart (Defensive Coordinator, Alabama)
5. Alabama - Nick Saban (Head Coach, Miami Dolphins)
6. Oregon - Mario Cristobal (Co-Offensive Coordinator, Oregon)
7. Utah - Kyle Whittingham (Defensive Coordinator, Utah)
8. Penn State - James Franklin (Head Coach, Vanderbilt)
9. Oklahoma - Lincoln Riley (Offensive Coordinator, Oklahoma)
10. Minnesota - PJ Fleck (Head Coach, Western Michigan)
- 7 of the 10 coaches were hired from coordinator positons/interim tags
- 3 of the coaches were hired after doing interim stints for various reasons (2 after coach fired, 1 after coach suspended)
- 1 came from the NFL, 1 came from Vanderbilt, 1 came from Western Michigan
- 6 of the coaches were on the staff of the previous coach
Of that group, I think everyone would agree that there was only 1 "can't miss" coach when he was hired (Saban).

Wow I didn’t realize Dabo had never been a coordinator before.

Just about the only people who even knew who Dabo Swinney was were Alabama fans and Clemson fans.
He was just a regular ole position coach who nobody else in America knew.

Yep. Clemson lucked into absolutel gold with Dabo as a position coach, and their admin was keen enough to recognize it and hand him the keys to their program before anyone else realized it.

They also stuck with him after 3 pretty unremarkable seasons. Maybe they saw something, maybe they got lucky, maybe a bit of both.
2008 - 4-3 (3-2)
2009 - 9-5 (6-2), #24
2010 - 6-7 (4-4)

Surprising that the LSU defense is so bad, given Orgeron's background. The others all make sense

Clemson didn’t have much choice. No one was clamoring to coach there and no one have a frick when Dabo was hired.
Everyone was wrong

Clemson was still a decent program from a major conference. They had options to hire a HC from a smaller school, or a coordinator looking to step up to HC if they wanted to.
They chose to promote their WR coach to Head Coach instead. That doesn't happen unless somebody sees something in the candidate.

Fleck really came out of nowhere didn't he?

You forgot to mention the conference is not that good! SEC is a lot tougher conference. Huge difference and Clemson was able to pick up 4* and 5* recruits when it started to win over others in their conference and over South Carolina.

He was definitely the hot mid-major coach, but those blow up more often than they hit.
And, to be fair, we'll see if this is a one year thing or not in the coming years. This has been a pretty lucky year for them - terrible schedule and a bunch of close wins over bad teams.

I think this is most likely not true given Clemson could pay more than most universities in the country.
How would a Texas AM fan know anyway.

I think Terry Don Phillips, the AD who promoted Dabo to interim and then permanent HC, was very impressed with his charisma and ability to relate to players. He deserves an awful lot of credit for hiring Dabo and then sticking with him through some early struggles, especially against USCe. He was right about Dabo, even more so than he knew in 2008.

You forgot to mention all of Clemson's wins over SEC teams and 'bluebloods' like Olahoma and Ohio State.
Mizzou didn't struggle this year b/c it loss to teams liKe Alabama. It lost to Vandy, Wyoming, Kentucky, Tenn, etc. t
playing in the SEC is a fake crutch
Clemson is not just recruiting against ACC schools. All the SEC schools and good programs outside the south are recruiting Georgia and Florida hard too.
