He out-coached Kelly.
So did 3 other coaches this year.
But yes, he’s a much better coach than midget Kelly.

People aren't even judging Kelly like this, and he's in his third season, went 8-4 and was smashed by Elko this year.
Eh, posters on this board frequently say Kelly is a bad coach, despite him having one of the better win percentages of any coach in this conference.

I guess I’m willing to give him one more year. He did some good things at Duke and didn’t get stupid overnight. Problem is the SEC schedule gives no mercy; was only slightly more difficult that Texas schedule this year, and they have more difficult road games next year. And I believe they have Notre Dame on the road.
His OC did him no favors at all though. And defensive collapse vs USC was surprising; though it’s a meaningless bowl game and both teams lost a bunch to the portal.
So for me jury is still out, but a horrible finish to what started as a good first season.

Sorry but this is nuts. Kirby outcoached Sark twice both with play calling and game day adjustments.
I like Sark, great coach, but cringe a bit when people refer to him as an “offensive genius”. A genius wouldn’t keep running bubble screens vs arguably the fastest defense in the country. And overall he just gets too high tech with things when all he needs to do is tell the OL to wear down the guy in front. I think a big reason the offense looks so befuddled sometimes is because he’s making it too complicated.
But I’m a traditional run to open the pass guy so…

Honestly, what surprised me was their defense. When he was DC at TAMU he was great.
The offense was a bit schitzo but they did have to go to their backup QB and they have no playmakers at receiver so I can understand that being the case.
Elko inherited a ton of talent so 8-5 is disappointing but I'd say it's too early to call him a bust. I would be comfortable saying his ceiling is merely good and not great, though.

Define "good," because A&M wants championships and they think his ceiling is one or more natties.

Overall it looks like he was a pretty terrible hire.
Based on the bowl game/ last month of the season he has no idea how to be a leader or handle success. You could tell by watching him strut around like a peacock after the LSU game that he's not used to being a winner.
He's basically not-Cajun Ed Orgeron except Elko has 0.00% chance of ever winning a title.
I rank him in the 14-16 range.

Too early to judge him as they are NOT A TALENTED TEAM , they have done and are doing a terrible job evaluating talent.

I would be surprised if he reached that level. By "good" I guess I mean averages 3ish losses a year while occasionally beating better teams but not seriously contending for hardware. Honestly not trying to knock him or the program, that was just my takeaway from watching most of your games.

That's fair, and I wasn't being an arse when I asked my question.
I don't know what to think. I think he can get us to the playoffs for sure, but as for competing for a natty...

quote:No, we were run circles on by a back up QB that we just decided to disregard in game plan. This wasnt an Elko move this was an athlete playing above their normal ability. Elko gets no more credit for that than Orgeron gets for Burrow.
He out-coached Kelly.

No arguments there.
Our offense got better as the year went on and our defense got worse.
Collin Klein has to change his play calling or he’s out the door. His run schemes are horrible.
For injuries, we lost our top two backs and half of our offensive line is lost for the season. With no receiver depth, we played about as good as we could.
On defense, yes we got a lot of sacks, but as the year went on, we got worn down and our secondary was way too inept to the big play.
For composite ranking in talent we were 7 or 8. So overall not bad. But where we need talent the most, we were deficient. No way around it.

Nice revisionist history buddy. You left out the part where Nuss turned the ball over three times.
That had to be in Kelly and not Elko right?

I think Elko is pretty damn good. It seems like the program needed tearing down to the studs post-Jimbo and instead the Aggies seem to be trying to get the best of both worlds by holding onto as much of Jimbo’s talent as possible and asking Elko to “win now”. That will keep them perpetually at 8-4 and ultimately get Elko fired.
