MSU played home and home with Syracuse when McNabb was their QB. Longest trips I remember were to Seattle to play Washington and Eugene to play Oregon.

Ole Miss is only an hour from Memhis. It's essentially a cross town game.

UK basketball to Alaska and they had like 90% to 95% of the seats. Anybody can travel to the sun filled south, west, or Hawaii in fabulous weather but going to Alaska in winter is pretty stout.

Why travel to Syracuse, NY though?

A road win over a meh Power 5 team goes a hell of a lot further with poll voters and committees than a rent-a-win at home. And instead of dropping a $500,000+ guarantee on the deal, LSU will end up making money on the two game set.

Alabama had about 26,000 in Pasadena when they played UCLA in 2000.

Auburn has been out to Wash St. and they have a home and home booked with Cal in a few years.

Lambeau is Iconic, but not the carrier dome.

Hawaii. Many.

Went the first year. We had at least 20k there. Both ends zones and lots of people scattered on the sidelines. Most fun I've ever had at a game. The concessions were unreal and their fans didn't give a shite and just wanted to have fun. They had local bands playing "Sweet Home Alabama" around the concourse and everyone had a blast (except for Fran who was bailing as fast as he could).

Not as far compared to California, but:

Bacardi Bowl, Havana, Mississippi? Nah, Cuba.

LSU played in the first Havana Bowl in 1907 and defeated Havana University 56-0.

Auburn played in 1937 against Villanova . 7-7 tie.

Mississippi State, Florida and Georgia Teachers College? also played in the bowl

Auburn game:

The game was played in a revolutionary atmosphere. Fulgencio Batista, the dictator who would be overthrown by Fidel Castro 22 years later, had just assumed power. The game was almost canceled because Batista’s picture was not in the game program.

UGA took 20,000 people to Tempe in 2008. The Gordon Biersch in their downtown area said they hadn't seen so many out of town fans even for the super bowl. They ran out of beer at 10am.

Auburn played Syracuse in I believe 2000? Not going to look it up but back then they actually had a decent football teams. I'm not sure why they went to complete shite, but they are very bad consistently now. Maybe they're decent this year so the game isn't a blowout before the end of the first quarter.
