think having to recruit against Clemson and Appalachian State is extremely tough for them. Students that aren't quiet good enough to make it to Clemson end up going to Appalachian State because it's in such an incredible area. Not much attraction to Columbia.

Lol maybe I don’t follow recruiting as closely
But I’m not sure we lose out on many recruits to App State

What’s holding SC back is a lack of history and tradition, and not being cut-throat in a conference of cut-throats. You’re not all-in on winning.

Hell, at LSU, the AD doesn’t even have to make bad hires to get fired. The last one got fired for suspending the SEC Champion basketball coach for getting wiretapped. And we just flat-out didn’t like the guy.

They never invested in football until after Clemson had became formidable in the 60s. Historical reputation also has a lot to do with it. Kentucky is always going to be good in basketball, Alabama will always be good in football unless there are things such as ncaa sanctions simply because of name. I can recall being at a Bama Kentucky basketball game in 85 or so and Kentucky came out in those blue uniforms and I thought, how cool is it to put THAT uniform on. Carolina doesn't do that to u.

You have had two hall of fame coaches the last two decades on the sideline and neither could win SEC titles.

So it's not coaching necessarily.

I think it ties into just not being quite good enough to keep up with the Big Six.

neither USC nor Pickens Tech 'invested' in football prior to Carolina's blowout win in 1975. (Frank Howard has a losing record vs the Gamecocks)

after a 52-20 blowout USC win in 1975, Cheatin Charley Pell - y'all know where he learned his 'ways' - was brought to town in 1976 and the orangeneck $2 bill machine was set in motion for the next 14 seasons...including NCAA probation and a 2nd visit that forced Dirty Danny out in 1989.

meanwhile in Columbia, James Holderman (1977-90) was using USC and its resources as a personal playground completely at the expense of football and ALL sports. that finally came to an end, but the separation of the two in-state football programs in the modern era of CFB had occurred.

USC held the advantage in the football series 18-15-2 from WWII (1941) until 1975. it all changed in 1976 with Cheatin Charley & Dirty Danny combined with the Holderman 'occupation' in the President's mansion in Columbia for the entirety of the 80s.

as mentioned by more than a few Gamecocks, USC has always been held back by its own self-serving BOT/administrative Country Club good-ol-boy issues. the 'good ol boys' at the Upstate school exist, but it's to win at all costs - personal gains be damned.

BOT = Board of Trustees

As mentioned, and well laid out, ours is completely political. Much more so than most for various reasons.

For example, when Clemson Tater Nikki Haley became Governor she immediately replaced our largest and wealthiest donor billionaire Darla Moore with a low level attorney from her home town of Lexington. Why? Because frick Carolina. That's why.

There’s really one answer. You’re not putting enough money, over decades into the program.

You want top 10 results, you need a top 10 coach. Same with facilities. The last piece is the administration of the school has to go all in. Over decades. You might slide for a while with the facilities, but not the other two.

SC doesn't lack for fund or investments in facilities
SC is top 8 in facility rankings

BTW,LOTS of schools spend lots of money with average results.Texas,Texas A&M,Arkansas and Michigan to name a few.

Lawsuit over what? It was completely in her power to do so. Think a USC Governor could do the same to Clemson's board? Think again. Nope.

1. They share their state with Clemson. Who, like it or not, has always had a better football program than USCjr.

2. They play in the sec. They don't have the resources that alot of the other programs have that they compete with for talent and wins.

3. They're south Carolina.

It's definitely recruiting. Not geographically positioned well and competing against all top SEC school who poach SC. Add in the recent success of Clemson and it makes it even harder.

But. Clemson has done it so why not SC? Takes a good, smart, supportive AD and a great coach. Spurrier could've maybe done it if he would've been at SC in his prime. It's crazy that he only won 1 NC in his time at UF. Crazy. 6 SEC titles yet 1 NC.

Spurrier only had a few national title caliber teams at Florida. 1994, 1995, 1996, 2001

1994 had the “choke at the Doak”

1995 went unbeaten but lost to Nebraska

1996 won the title

2001 lost to Auburn and Tennessee

SEC is a monster. Also, he had to deal with FSU at their height, had to beat them on the field and compete against a prime Bobby Bowden for Florida recruits. FSU won 2 titles in the 1990s, and would’ve won 4 if it wasn’t for Florida. FSU didn’t have to deal with a monstrous conference (they were the only Power) and never played in a CCG

Let’s say your right.

It’s the coach, then. And there are probably 2 or 3 that can put in that league, at any given time.
