Before that they were technically national championship games if it was 1 vs 2.. but not really since the national champion was decided by the polls before the bowl games for a while.
1979 was 1 vs 6.. not a title game
1978 you could claim as a title game
1973 Alabama lost their bowl game but lucked into the arbitrary system of the AP picking the champion before the bowls
You can say the 73 Sugar Bowl of the 1973 season was the last title game Alabama's lost.

Omit the Arkansas game. In games between the top two ranked teams in the polls, Alabama has won five in a row going back to the Sugar Bowl win over Penn State.

We were awarded the Natty before the bowls. The bowl games at the time were just exhibition bonus type games.
