I dont know why people act like smith was just a good back behind a great line. Dude was so smooth and always had the best vision . I think hes underrated, talent wise

Earl Campbell only had 5 seasons with 1,000+ rushing yards.
Peyton had 10 along Sanders having 10 in 10 season.
Hell,Eric Dickerson had 7 and far more total yards.
Campbell has very good in that 5 season snapshot but no where close to an all timer

Probably OJ.
He just had that killer instinct...

I didn't fail to mention him in the OP because of that. I just didn't think of it, same as Barry Sanders, because even though I'm not a NFL fan, I know both of those guys were among the best.
One guy that has surprised me being mentioned so much in this thread is Campbell
Earl was such a brutal, physical rusher with pretty good speed. I can't put him on Mount Rushmore but he stands pretty high in the pecking order of great running backs. Texans love the guy.

Not around for Jim Brown and too young to remember OJ
I would say Barry Sanders, Walter Payton or Emmitt Smith
Sanders and Payton could create something out of nothing
Smith was probably more to do with the dominant team he was on
I think RB's are used different in today's game and since they are not the focal point of most offenses the days of any running back dominating are probably over
Ask most RB's today, they would rather play with a Tom Brady which Fournette was fortunate to do rather than Derrick Henry who has to operate behind Tannehill. I don't see Henry winning a super bowl that way just as Fournette would not have won one with Jacksonville under the QB's he played with. Might be different now if Lawrence is all that. Same thing with someone like Leveon Bell who has done nothing since leaving the Steelers.

Love Barry Sanders, would rather watch him than any other back in history.
That said a guy who can’t run at the goal line is an issue.

There is not a close second.

question did you watch him back in the day? Anyone not including him as an all time great is questionable. I mean I can understand him not in a top 3-5 as for his career length but damn he was so dominate. Guy is a 1st ballot HoF.

Does make you wonder, though, how any of these guys would do outside of their era.
If you teleported nearly any of the current top NFL RBs back 50 or 60 years, would they similarly dominate?
That is a hole best to not go down. I say compare to what was aorund them. i mean Brown was a beast but just size strength compated to today is average. But if Brown was playing today he would have trained and played in systems way different. Teams were always stacked to stop him and ran loads of stuff like 4-4, 5-3 or 6-2 looks always like 8 in the box stuff. Briown was the most domnate compared to his time. My favorites are Campbell and Walter but I am an old fart.

Good point, I guess you could look at it both ways.

Yes. Did you watch Eric Dickerson?
What exactly is your measuring stick and which ones does he check off?
# of 1,000 yard seasons? No
All time yards? No
YPC? No
2,000 yard seasons?No
And not in the top 10 in any of those categories.

His dominance at the time of his peak. Not saying he is best ever but clearlya an all time great. Stil lused as a measuring stick today as a power back.

Why not Eric Dickerson then? William Andrews?Frank Gore?George Rodgers?Tony Dorsett?
All were dominant at their "peak"

Barry Sanders was a dominant player. The kind that can just take over a game. So was Jim Brown.
I truly think Hershel would have been there if he had started playing in the NFL first. Bo would have been there too if he had stayed football only.
I think Derrick Henry, of all the backs out there now, has the potential to be a top 5 all time back - maybe longer if he can maintain what he is doing now for another 3-4 years without injury.
The younger players coming out now have a better chance to last longer and be more effective. They can come out earlier and they have much better training/nutrition than years past. Guys are able to play longer than before. Longevity is a key here in judging this.

Barry Sanders is the GOAT running back at any level.

I will forever hate Detroit for ruining his career.
