I admit that I don't follow off-season football as much as you guys, but I'm still trying to figure out why Auburn is getting so much media love. Herbie picked Auburn last night to be a sleeper for the BCS title game, I don't get it? Help me understand why people think they are going to make a HUGE jump from last year to this year. Returning starters? Several new superstud freshmen or junior college players?

Herbie=/=people. Just listen to the auburn fanbase and the auburn coaching staff and you'll know auburn isn't good enough for any of that. Some talking head gets up there and spouts off at the mouth and everyone panics. I don't understand it.

Hot name at the time plus a very flashy offense, ESPin loves a flashy offense not the traditional old defense pound them type ball.

Also Chizik and Herb are friends.

I don't understand it either.

Herbie and Chiz are pretty good friends, so that could be something to do with it.

Auburn will win the BCS National Championship. Cam Newton can't be stopped.

Not a bad idea.

It would keep from having the same flames over and over.

So Herbstreit must not be the only one on the AU bandwagon.

Thanks for the responses guys. That went okay without turning into a bunch of flame-throwing. I like the answer about the flashy offense the best.

But looking at their results from last year (beat down by Arkansas and LSU, loss to UGA), Auburn needs to make a big leap forward to represent the West in the SEC Championship Game.

Of course, teams have made that big leap forward from year-to-year, I just find it odd that many in the media are predicting that for Auburn this season.

No, he is the only one who has said it. And he said it several days and several threads ago. It's one man's opinion.

Im confused. You cite to herbie as "auburn love" the auburn fan base tells you how stupid it is, and now you say herbie must not be the only one on the aub bandwagon. I'm sure there are a few other fools, but its far from a consensus.

1956= 7-3 5th in SEC
1957= 10-0 1st in SEC

1992= 5-5-1 5th in West
1993= 11-0 1st in West

1999= 5-6 5th in West
2000= 9-4 1st in West

2003= 7-5 3rd in West
2004= 13-0 1st in West

We've always been a team that is average/bad one year, and great the next.. It would not surprise me at all if this year was the same way.. Not saying it's going to happen, but the circumstances are favorable.

This thread has been done 100x in the last month. I do not expect AU to win the west and hope for 9 or 10 wins at best. However, here are the reasons they have a shot...

1. All the toughest games except Bama are at home.

2. We do not play UF or UT (although USC will probably be better this year).

3. We return a lot of starters and have tons of experience, especially on the lines.

4. Bama is replacing 9 starters on defense and has to play Florida in the regular season.

5. We had a great recruiting class that will provide depth that was sorely lacking last year and cost us three games in the fourth quarter. It should also tremendously improve special teams.

6. We have a big name QB who has tons of potential.

7. Gus Malzahn.

8. Our players are in year two of their "systems" which is typically when you see a lot of improvement.

9. Finally, we don't really have to make a "HUGE" jump from last year to this. We were three fourth quarter collapses from being 11-2 last year with like 70 scholarship players and a QB who I can throw harder and run faster than. Couple that with added depth and a more favorable home schedule and it's very possible we make some noise.

It's also just as likely we finish 8-5 again.

in the top 3 reasons, for me, that AU has a shot at the West is the return of Zac Etheridge, Aaron Savage, and Mike McNeil. This plus increased depth across the board on D=big move forward on D.
