Riley at his best got to play dragon slayer. I can't spell this out for you any clearer. Riley was offered interviews by USC and Bama when he was actually slaying dragons. He hasn't in awhile. He has lost to Oregon since 2008 - that's 8 straight year. He was bowl eligible barely once in the last 3 years. Oregon State is absolute garbage this year talent wise. Had he stayed there they probably go 3-9.

Riley needed to revive his career and most people see the writing on the wall.

I keep forgetting Riley wasn't their hc when they destroyed Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl.

That was a fun game. I am interested to see Riley at Nebraska quite frankly. I actually will be rooting for him.

For example, how long can a team claim to be an "elite program" if they fail to win anything significant since their last conference or national championship?

At least as long as it takes to get rid of that LGBT label on a program...

Almost all programs go through ups and downs, and I agree with some earlier posters that there are just not that many elite programs. At any one time, I'd say there are about 8 that are historically elite, and another handful that may qualify as elite at the moment, and only time will tell if they stay there.

Edit, and to answer the original question, I feel like a program's elite status is in jeopardy if they have not won a title in about twenty-five years. That is basically a generation. That timeline can be extended a bit by a national title game appearance. Notre Dame is obviously one of the best teams in the country historically, but lots of people question if they are still elite. I think the appearance in the title game against Bama gives them some breathing room.

I know plenty of UGA fans that are "sure" you are elite.

I think UT can barely get away with it because 98 doesn't seem that long ago.

However, GA cannot reach back to 1980 - 1981. Too much time has passed.
Georgia has more of an argument than Tennessee. They havent won the big one since 1980, but they are always in the mix and a perennial power. Tennessee has been a steaming pile since 1998.

Wouldn't Vol fans consider the program a steaming pile if it isn't winning national championships?

Where we need to be to be satisfied is winning the east 3 out of every 5 years or so, winning the SEC once every 4-5 years (more hopefully), and constantly in the mix for the Playoffs.

But now you're gonna say something about how UT has settled into a groove of being happy with 7 wins (which isn't true), and to that, I say frick you sir

Actually, I am not going to say that nor did I plan to say that.

You, sir, said that. And I suspect deep inside you know it's true but are too ashamed to admit it.

TN has won only 6 national titles in 120 years of football.

TN football is a success if we win the SEC 2 times a decade. Average 9-10 wins a year and play for the national title once a decade and win it every 2 decades.

Of course these are averages.. We may win 4 SEC titles and 2 NC in one 10 year spurt and not have any the next 10.
