Do you honestly know anymore?

Which of these two plays should have been called?

(SEC review booth said the top was legal, and the bottom was RTP on #9.)

I don't know that either should have been called, but the 2nd play was certainly a lot lower. They will call it if you go at the knees.

The top one is while he's still releasing the ball. What's the issue there?

The bottom one is after the release, but close enough to it that I think that the call could have gone either way. The bottom one is also more likely to injure, considering how low the hit is.

Looks like the bottom one was trying to take out the legs.

The top one definitely isn’t. He made contact almost immediately as the ball

To clarify, the top one was more "targeting" than RTP. If they are using the standard "forcible contact to the head or neck area", that play seemed textbook.

The top one is closer to fitting the definition of targeting: helmet to helmet and launching are both clearly present. The bottom one was a shoulder to the thigh. All of you who are defending the bottom call as a low hit need to get your eyes checked.

Top one is a good clean hit. Head up, first contact with the chest.

Bottom one is borderline. Guy diving for the QBs knees which is illegal now. Hit him right around the knee area.
Could have gone either way.

Hitting the QB in the head with your ring finger is also roughing the passer now, apparently. Alabama was flagged for a lineman's hand literally grazing the QB's helmet.

I totally get the intent and reasoning behind the new understanding of concussions and their long term effects on the brain, but it's beyond ridiculous how some of these games are called now. The defense is essentially damned if they do or don't when it comes to hitting a QB, and they may as well put a damn flag belt on the QB's waist and call it a day.

Yeah, if his kneecap was attached to his hip.

Bottom one is illegal based on current rules. You can’t tackle that low.

UGA defender got called for the same thing and he was tripped into it.

You can absolutely hit a qb in the hip. C'mon now.

I agree the top one isn’t, especially based on timing, but his face mask hit the QB’s face mask. That’s a hit to the head and for the past 2-3 years we’ve been told hits to the heads on QB’s is always a penalty

I am all about player safety but he tackled him just below the waist. Anything near the head with the helmet in the lead is dangerous.

You’re not allowed to tackle middle of the thigh up to the hip? Damn where can you hit someone.

This is just for reference. He actually hit his arse with his helmet (easy Aggy) and his hip with his shoulder pad.
