Hence the (Long) in the title.

Look. I despise the a-hole for his combative stance during the hurricane fiasco, but nobody outside of LSU and UF fans will remember that in three years. The facilities issue is much more of a hit to his legacy.

I really don’t give one F about his legacy or UF or their facilities.

What I do care about is the fraud that he and Mcillwain perpetrated against LSU.

And to this day they lie about what happened.

I posed the question strictly with regard to UF football.

Well you didn't say that, if I only look at football and at his head coaching hires, other than Urban Meyer he sucked.

But yes, at Florida we do give a rats arse about all the other sports and that is why the athletic dept is the best in the SEC, and one of the best in the country because of Foley so as an AD his legacy is untouchable.

Oh trust me. You’re preaching to the choir here. I agree with you 100% and I hate the a-hole and the hurricane is a huge reason why I hate him. I just geared this toward the SEC Rant because I believe he shoulders a LOT of the blame for where their football program is now and in my opinion that’s due to the reasons I laid out.

If you’re an AD in the SEC, you better be The Atheletic Director of Football

So, the straight truth about what happened, LSU whined until they got the game moved to Baton Rouge, Florida went there and upset LSU at home 16-10 and will be hated forever by butt - hurt LSU fans. Truth!

Grateful to him because he was a big supporter of us moving to the SEC. He was a visionary.

No argument here dude and you’ll have a very hard time finding one LSU fan who can stand Alleva. Safe to say we all want him gone. The obvious difference is that when the topic of best athletic directors in recent times comes up, unlike Foley, you won’t find Alleva anywhere in the conversation.

Truth is that if LSU had won the game that year this would be over. You hate him because an inferior team went to BR and beat an LSU team that we overconfident and didn't play to their potential.

I agree, but as an AD he was the GOAT in the SEC.

What??? It’s right there in the thread title and throughout the OP numbnuts! You did state that you didn’t read it. Maybe you should read before answering. Did you just glance at the title and see the words Foley and legacy?

quote:

And I’ll submit that he was 0 for 3 in football hires because Machen is the reason y’all wound up with Meyer.

Hi Matt.

1)
The truth is you are quoting the wrong person.

2)
I don’t hate anyone.

3)
I will continue to enjoy the plight of the florida football program.

He didn’t have “a couple” of bad football coach hires. He had three. He was 0 for 3 in football hires.

He definitely had some bad hires. I will say, the only one that really ever bothered me was the McElwain hire. It never made sense IMO. Zook had a unique set of circumstances because of the timing of Spurrier's resignation. Foley swung for the fences and came very close to landing the big fish, it just didn't work out. Muschamp had HC buzz around him and seemed liked a decent fit. Of course only one of his 4 hires worked out, so that has to be part of his legacy.

Sure, overall UF athletics excelled while he was there. But what is his legacy with regard to the UF football program?

Foley’s non-football hires were pretty good for the most part. However, football pays the bills and is by far the most important, visible sport on any campus. Foley’s football hires were underwhelming. UF President Machen gets the credit for the Urbz hire as that was his boy at Utah. Florida fans have never forgiven Foley for telling Spurrier that he’d have to interview just like everyone else in 2005 when Spurrier wanted the job after Zook was fired.

Foley is also responsible for the current state of UF’s sports facilities. He said that UF wouldn’t get into a facilities arms race when Bama, AU, aTm, and others started upgrading their stadiums; he took the position that UF recruited itself and didn’t need to match others’ spending to maintain excellence.

Well, he was wrong about that and his legacy is a bit tarnished.

25 years or so ago, yeah, you’d be correct. I truly don’t dwell on that loss though. I have bigger fish to fry in life than to hang on to that.

That rumor had nothing to do with Foley, that was about Bernie Machen.

Foley deserves some blame, but he was also put on a leash by the administration and the Board of Directors during the recession to avoid negative publicity while the school was facing major budget cuts.
