What coaches do you think will have to perform very well this season to keep their job?

The only two I think are Butch and Malzahan. Any other obvious one I'm missing?

Sumlin, Freeze (not on the field related though), and maybe Bert seems like Jeff Long doesn't expect much though.

If Freeze doesn't get fired due to the NCAA shitshow, I don't think OM lets him go. If they're willing to keep him around after all that has happened I think he'll survive a mediocre season.

It's the SEC. The seat is almost never cool in this league, especially on this board after a loss.

Butch will probably manage to pull off a miracle and we'll extend his contract to some absurd number for a really long time and leave ourselves a 100 million dollar buyout. That would be my guess.

I really think Freeze is one rape case away from being an offensive analyst for Saban

The seat is pretty warm, but it's not hot.

Sumlin is absolutely on the hot seat when you factor in that none of the assistants' contracts go beyond the end of this season right now.

Also, if he's retained after this year, he has to be EXTENDED for recruiting reasons. There's no way that the board of regents will approve a contract extension after another 5-0 start and 8-5 finish or worse.

Butch inherited a freakin mess and has finished ranked in the top 25 the last 2 years.

aTm hasn't finished a season ranked since '13.

Butch will have a little more room for error than Sumlin.

How many years are left in Butch Jones' contract vs. Sumlin's?

When you have only 1 year left in your contract after a season, you're either fired or extended. (2018 is the last year on Sumlin's current contract) The third option is, by far, the worst of both worlds.

Jones - Expires 2/28/19 with a $2,000,000 buyout.

This is wrong. Butch isn't on the hot seat with back to back 9 win seasons. Tennessee is 1 of only 3 schools in the SEC that finished with 9 wins or more the last 2 seasons. Joining Alabama and Florida.

He had wins over Florida, Georgia, Virginia Tech (ACC runner up) and Nebraska last year prior to us getting ravaged by injuries and dropping some games that we shouldn't have.

His seat is warm because perpetual 9 win seasons aren't going to get it done at UT regardless if we are coming out of the darkest period of football in school history or not. He took over the biggest mess in the SEC with zero talent on the team when he accepted the job. His seat being hot after back to back Top 25 finishes is trash. If he wins 7 or less regular season games this year then he is likely gone. 8 wins buys him 1 more year due to the losses to the draft. Anything more than that and He probably gets an extension.

Butch being on the hot seat is crazy talk when you think about where Tennessee was 5-10 years before. There's no question that they're in much better shape now and letting him go would basically undo all of the progress the program has made so far.

The sense that I get from the Tennessee faithful is that he's taken them about as far as he can with them. That's the way it was with Donnan at UGA, also coming off some bad years of football. Donnan very consistent at getting UGA to a top 20 ranking and 8 or 9 wins, but failed to live up to the overall expectations.

Thats probably the most fair critique that hes gotten on this website.

I/We will know a lot more about him after this season. If he gets it done that's great. If he doesn't then he has without a doubt put this program back into a respectable position and will leave a ton of talent for the next coach. That alone makes hiring a big name a lot more likely than a guy whose going to have to come in and start from scratch like Jones did.
