Near the end with the Croatia goal/not goal scenario, it was stated that FIFA uses an “IMU sensors housed within the Trionda ball are capable of determining any slight contact, and exact location, displayed to viewers in the broadcast as a 'heartbeat graphic', and allowing officials an unprecedented level of data to make fast, accurate decisions. This is also used to determine exact location of the ball as it pertains to who may be offsides”

Why doesn’t the NFL of CFB this, instead our the imaginary line?

Been saying that same thing for years. Also, put sensors on the pylons facing each other (think garage door sensor mentality) with 2 sensors on each end of the football.

Boom

Same. I really wanted to get into and appreciate soccer because there were really cool goals scored on both sides but they just erase them like its nothing. Really weird for the sport, you'd think they'd want more action but I guess soccer is already extremely popular all over the world so I guess they arent worried about it...

its ludicrous when you consider they allow a fouled player to play on if he still has possession (because of the advantage), but conversely negate goals over minute technicalities like offsides, even though its plain as day it wouldn't have affected the outcome of the play.

in american football, if the ball isn't catchable, the pass interference is irrelevant. Why soccer doesn't follow the same principle with offsides is a farce.

Technology giveth and taketh away. Pros and cons.

Using an CGI generated image to justify a player being offside by a toenail is frustrating.

Because with CGI they can just enlarge or shrink the foot image if desired.

Its the same thing a declining a penalty. If you stop they will blow the whistle and you take the foul.

. Yeah that rule is bullshite too. Think about it. You are allowed to commit a penalty even though it subjectively doesnt affect the play since it was a subjectively unwatchable pass.

Thats like saying there was an egregious hold on the play, but it was on the other side of the field away from the ball, and wouldnt affect the play.

Thats dumb as frick.

should a defensive back on the opposite side of the field away from the play be able to tackle the wide receiver and pin him to the ground while the ball is being thrown to a different receiver?

FALSE

The hold could prevent the ball carrier from being chased down the field.

An uncatchable pass is instantly an incompletion and the play is over..

Believe it or not the offside rule was added to increase scoring.

Before it was added teams would park a couple of players right in front of the other team's goal. The other team, not surprisingly, would park more defensive players back there. So the entire game consisted of both teams lobbing deep passes into the box, which the defense almost always won. Lots and lots of 0-0 games.

The offside rule opened up the entire field and made the game more exciting for the fans.

Yea..we have way to much technology now to decide games by the very flawed human eye.

They usually call defensive holding, regardless if a pass is even thrown.

One big issues with sensors in US football is that they can be very accurate but the current rules don't support the technology. For example - some want to use sensors for TD's or first downs. They would be great at determining the exact position of the ball but have no idea whether the player was down and then extended the ball

That ball wasn’t touched, it didn’t change trajectory, and the chip registered only one hit, when it went off the Portuguese player.

FIFA fricked Croatia.

The main thing I've learned from watching a few matches is soccer players are some whiny little bitches.

the rule has good intentions, but the nuance of it has them right back where they started.

Theres a pretty significant difference in "cherry picking", and starting your run before the backline can adjust.
