what a great dude. Knew what he built but not much about him. Everything about him is top-notch. Tip of the cap to our rowdy bayou cousins. I can see why there is still such pride about what he built and how he built it.

I was a huge LSU baseball fan in high school. Would've loved to played for him!

I used to go to LSU baseball camp ever year as a kid back when he was still coaching. When it was Skip's tun to talk, you could tell, even in the small amount of time I had around him, why players wanted to play for him and play hard.

I coached at Skip’s camp for several years back then when I was in high school/starting college. I didn’t realize at the time how fortunate I was to be around a legend so much at the time. He liked me so much he even let me swim in his pool after pulling weeds at his house....haha.

would be funny if I was on one of your teams I think I went from like 1995-2001 or somewhere around then. I know the last year I went was after my sophomore year of high school in 2001. I know one year my coach was Jeremy Witten and another year was Matt Colvin, both LSU players. ANother coach, can't remember if it was my coach or just another in my age group, was a coach at Delta State

I was there in Skip’s earlier years. Like 1987-1990

I only went to one camp. It was when Tommy Lasorda was there and I wanted to play 2nd because Mitch Gaspard was my favorite player and he was out there. My dumbass got a signed ball by Lasorda and then went home and hit it with a bat over and over and messed it up.

That '89 A&M team had to be the best team ever that didn't make the CWS....They were REALLY good.

The 1989 Texas A&M team was 58-5 entering the postseason. Arkansas was really good this year, but that A&M team was thought of as one of the best teams of all-time before geting upset by LSU in the College Station regional. Vandy's team in 2013 that went 26-3 in the SEC and failed to make it to Omaha was a bigger dissappointment than Arkansas this year. Arkansas was a pretty standrard #1 overall seed in the NCAAT. The #1 overall seed has failed to make it to Omaha the following years:

2000 - South Carolina
2002 - Florida State
2003 - Florida State
2007 - Vanderbilt
2014 - Oregon State
2015 - UCLA
2019 - UCLA
2021 - Arkansas

As shown, it happens pretty frequently, having occurred 8 times in the past 21 NCAATs

Must be talking about Boo Ferris, the Division II version of Skip. Great guy and great story about his career. Book about him is a good read

Reading an old Advocate article about it and enjoyed this tidbit:

quote:

Texas A&M’s baseball stadium was completely empty.

At least that’s what Ben McDonald thought while he conducted a pregame interview with A&M coach Rob Childress. The two were in the home dugout hours before first pitch of the Aggies’ game against Ole Miss last season when McDonald turned toward some shouting.

“I hear an old man up in the stands,” said McDonald, LSU’s former star pitcher turned ESPN broadcaster. “This guy has to be 75 or 80. He’s got a cane.”

The old man, having finally gotten McDonald’s attention, yelled, “We still hate you and LSU here at A&M!”

Texas law enforcement officials guarded those LSU fans who had made the trip, ushering them onto the field to celebrate with the team and then escorting them to their vehicles after A&M fans had left the park.

“It was a little scary getting out of there,” said Alex Wall, a retired city court judge whose son was on the team. “I can remember them throwing rocks on us and spitting on us.”

Said Chris Guillot, a long-time LSU fan in attendance at the regional: “We were fearing for our lives. It got heated.”

Fans and the team returned to the Holiday Inn. Guillot bought the hotel bar completely out of beer, and Davis bought 125 hamburgers at Whataburger.

They partied all night long around the Holiday Inn’s pool area and in a meeting room.

I went to an early Skip Bertman baseball camp
He literally made high school baseball in the state of LA
Every high school coach that attended started using all the drills he taught at the camp. Boots Garland running drills were the best.

Wall and Guillot are blowing smoke, I guarantee you the LSU fans there probably provoked a lot of what they got thrown at them

The kicker was the MSU fan holding a two by four and ready to go at it with Joey "Albert" Belle, I had never seen that footage until this show. What a loser that guy must have been to show up and taunt a black player.

As great as that ESPN program was, there was a side to Skip as a HC that will never see the light of the public's eye: almost every former player will agree that he was one of the most X rated HC out there when it came to speaking to his players. Most of the really good Skip stories, told at his teams' reunions, are XX rated. And this not meant as a knock on him.
