Was Deboer the fourth or the fifth pick?

5th most likely. Gumps are trying to convince themselves he was the guy all along.

He was about 99 spots above your head coach. So whatever position that was.

DeBoer is going to sodomize that fat frick in Knoxville, Deliverance style. If that dude can get demolished by an absolute idiot like Billy Napier, there is literally no telling what an actual coach like DeBoer is gonna do.

Sure there was interest in luring Sark.

Other than that, as quickly as this went, Deboer had to be at the top of their list.

I'm not sure any "consideration" to the younger coaches still in their 30s being mentioned was much more that relationship building.

Hard to imagine, their AD Byrne would think it's a good idea to bring in a coach still in his 30s to deal with the pressure cooker of taking over for Saban.

Lanning was first and declined
Sarkisian was never a realistic candidate
Kiffin wasn't considered for whatever reason
So this guy was the 2nd reasonable choice

I think Lanning was first choice

Could well be the case.

However, Lanning's only in his mid-30s. That just strikes me as very young to be the hand picked first choice for the pressure cooker replacing Saban at Alabama will be.

I can see that as AD you want him to know he's being seriously considered.

It's really all just conjecture as we'll never really know exactly what Byrne was thinking.

He is no Derek Dooley, Butch Jones, or Jeremy Pruitt. That is for sure.

That's certainly one way to cope, considering everyone turned Alabama down (only a fool would follow Saban) and you guys end up hiring someone whose name you wouldn't even have recognized a couple weeks ago.

Not sure he topped the list, but he was definitely top 5 if we're being honest. Of course they made Kirby and Sark say no, (maybe even Dabo?) but had to know the chances were slim. DeBoer was high on the list...as he would be for any opening this year.

How can this be when they made a hire in only 48 hours?

Depends what your definiton is.

If you consider this an offer then he is probably their third, fourth or lower.

Byrne: Hello. (long conversation about what Bama has to offer) Would you consider coaching for such a school as that?

Coach: I'm happy right here.

Byrne: Well, I didn't offer. Just wondering if you would consider a school "like" that. Bye.

Or, if you only consider this an offer, he's first.

Byrne: Hello. (long conversation about what Bama has to offer) Would you consider coaching for such a school as that?

Deboer: Yes, I would. I would consider that.

Jimmy Sexton: (talks a lot)

Byrne: Okay, we'd like you to be our coach.

Deboer: Great.

Because there was coordination between the AD and Saban other than the words... 'You're fired'?
