Probably because Wal Mart forced so many small businesses out.
Hopefully this will resonate in your empty minds:

The Northwest Arkansas economy’s growth rate will rank No. 5 nationally through 2021, researchers with IHS Global Insight predict.
The same economic analysis, which was prepared for the U.S. Conference of Mayors, predicts Northwest Arkansas will rank No. 8 in the U.S. in its job growth rate in 2017.
The IHS report continues a series of positive economic and quality of life reports about Northwest Arkansas and how it stacks up against the nation’s other metropolitan areas. In recent months, Forbes put the Fayetteville-Springdale-Rogers Metropolitan Statistical Area (Northwest Arkansas) at No. 2 on its list of Best Midsize Cities for Jobs and the region was No. 3 on a U.S. News and World Report ranking of Best Places to Live.
Only four U.S. regions — two in Utah and two in Florida — are expected to see their economies grow at a faster rate than Northwest Arkansas through 2021. The 3.9 percent annual growth rate predicted for Northwest Arkansas will push the region’s economy past $30 billion.
Impressive job growth will be part of the strong economic performance. The report shows jobs increased in Northwest Arkansas by 5 percent in 2015. The region’s job growth wasn’t expected to rank in the nation’s Top 10 this year, but it will be ranked again in 2017, coming in at No. 8, the analysis shows.

Crystal bridges what? Can you explain or have an image?
Are they called Walton crystal bridges in Fayetteville ?
What??
Man, I went to Crystal Bridges a couple weeks ago and stared at a frickin Rembrandt for like 5 minutes. Now, I've never been too much for "the arts", as it were, but that place is DAMN impressive. Not just the amazing art on display, but the entire grounds is absolutely gorgeous. And I think it's super cool how it sits in the woods.
Doesn't cost a dime.
Things like Crystal Bridges and regularly making all those best places to live lists is bringing a lot of money into this area. Big money too. Not even connected to Wal-Mart. All these banking executives and Grammy award winning musicians and industry giants hitting retirement age are settling here.
I love this place.

Crystal Bridges is the type of place a person who "isn't an art person" should go. It's totally accessible, the permanent collection is free to view, and it has pieces there on a par with any of the top museums in the nation.
I read some more articles about the donation and it sounds like it is essentially a $110 million injection to the Fayetteville campus endowment, and $10 million towards facilities improvements.

A buddy of mine sold Alice Walton the quartz crystals used at crystal bridges. She paid $250k for crystals I would have sold her for $10k

Tents
Great for doing whatever!
Ok, I got nothing. Any contribution, whether toward athletics or academics, is a good thing.
I just wish the Walton family could get more than 5 cashiers on a busy day where there are 20+ checkout lanes.

I'm surprised that they haven't opened a school of art before now and a 125 million is nothing to what they put into the area to support cultural diversity and art. Heck, they spent over a billion building crystal bridges and look at all the tourist business we get now. It's kind of insane when you think about it.
125 million doesn't buy several of the paintings they've bought up over the past few years. And when I say that I mean they have several that would go for over 125 million a piece.

Well, when you are sitting on a ridiculous, Scrooge McDuck pile of $, have no qualms paying employees less than what it takes to eat and then putting out donation boxes for the employees during the holidays in hopes that shoppers will care more about their employees than they do, squeeze vendors into bankruptcy or walk away from them at the first sign of a cheaper foreign option when WM is their primary or often ONLY customer, lighting $150M on fire for a stupid Jackson Pollack vomit painting just to get a bit more admiration at the yacht club fits right in.

People's inability to separate the Walton family fortune from the current daily operations and policy of Wal-Mart always cracks me up.

This area is poised to become a freaking powerhouse.
It definitely is. About 10 years ago, Walmart forced their vendors to open sales offices in Bentonville, this area exploded. And it's a damn nice area. If I had a kids, I could see settling down over here.
As of now, my heart is truly in New Orleans. But I'm getting paid stupidly well over here. But if i moved back right now, I'd be looking at a $30k+ paycut, probably about $40k. I'd be foolish to leave here right now. Especially considering that the cost of living is so low in Fayetteville.
But that says a lot about this area. I'm homesick, and miss playing music with a passion. But I just can't leave. And considering this was where I slept on Saturday night:
I can't complain.

You hitting Roots Fest this weekend?

shite. I forgot that was coming up. And apparently Friday and Saturday tickets are sold out. So unless I find something on Craigslist, probably not. I've been working so many damn hours on my project, I've been out of the loop on almost everything.

Still lots of nusic around town usually. You'll just miss the main stage stuff.

Wth? I've been to a variety of different Walmarts around Christmas time over the years and have never seen anything like that. There's always a Salvation Army bell ringer outside but that's every large chain.
And next time try to complete a lucid thought in your reply- more words mashed together is not necessarily better.

The family owns 54% of the company. No one sits on the board of directors without the family's explicit approval, no one holds any of the 6 Pres/CEO positions without the family's implicit approval. Do you not think HOW the company will be run is one of the determining factors considered by the family? How it IS run as to whether or not someone is retained? If the family wanted WM to treat vendors more fairly, it would be done. If the family wanted to place more emphasis in buying stateside, it would be done. If the family wanted to pay employees a fair wage, it would be done. If you want to argue the virtues of capitalism and the need to be good stewards within the inherent ambiguity, fine. That'd be a good talk. But don't tell me the Walton family doesn't impact the issues I brought up.
Did I crack you up this time?

So here's a blurb from your first link:
The 2nd seems to more align with your bitching but your poorly written comment seemed to imply that Walmart, as a company, did this which is not true. I'd also like to add that the 2nd article was from 2013. In 2015, Walmart bumped their wages which I agree did need to happen.
One last comment, a decent employee (associate) should be able to work themselves up the ladder some, but if your goal in life is to remain stagnant then don't expect fur coats in your future.
quote:
Wal-Mart spokeswoman Kayla Whaling quickly responded to the criticism, saying the drive was planned by one of the store's employees, who was collecting food for two co-workers who were on a leave of absence and unable to work.
