Texas A&M counts its medical research, $435M, UT does not count its medical schools, which combine for another $800M. The main reason is semi-legit in that ATM does most or all of its work at College Station, UT has two physically separate branches that comprise its medical & life sciences work.

I just read two new rankings that came out recently, US news and a world report on top universities in the world.
on US News, Texas was 9th best public university and A&M 20th.
Its pretty well known Texas is a better school than A&M, but A&M is very good school.

I just read a report (hot off the press, so no link) from the Myass Institute which is widely respected as the best source of information in this field and they actually said A&M was not only the #1 public university in Texas but the #1 university in the world.
