The problem is lots of places are willing to throw ridiculous money at a coach....places with better resources and recruiting area

As far as SEC towns go, Knoxville has to be among the top in terms of attractive areas. It is not a pure college town, it has that aspect but also much more to offer which a lot of the smaller towns just dont have. Also no pesky income tax on that New NIL money. Its in a good area very accessible to the rest of the country and less than 3 hours from a few major population centers. It has just as much to offer, if not more, than a lot of college towns.

UT's football facility is on the elite tier, just as good as anyone else's in the SEC. Resources are not an issue.

I see your point, but if Tennessee keeps having losing seasons, I don’t see a top coach taking over.

I agree and thats why we really need Josh to step up and put us back in the 8ish wins per year territory before we can be in a position to land a big fish. Its sad how far weve fallen

I mean yeah, but you could replace Tennessee with 99% of other schools and its the same story

Again, I agree Bama is the biggest name obviously, but the media still hypes up Norte Dame, USC, Texas, etc…

Tennessee is on the verge of commentators forgetting what they used to be, and I mean this with all honesty and no trolling.

USC QBs are still godly, Norte Dame LBs still get national attention, Texas QBs and receivers… but Tennessee gets diddly. It’s honestly not fair, but it’s the way it’s going.

With a not-so-strong talent base in Tennessee, you’ll need out of state kids to take a leap of faith to join your current coaching staff.

While this was once the case...it isn't true that there isn't sufficient talent in the state of Tennessee.

In 2020, states ranked by "Blue-Chip" players (4 and 5-star rankings based on 24/7 composite) from 2016-2020.

1. Florida - 258
2. Texas - 245

3. California - 206
4. Georgia - 175
5. Louisiana - 76

6. North Carolina - 62
7. Alabama - 62
8. Ohio - 59
9. Maryland - 52
10. Tennessee - 51

Ranking States by Blue-Chip Recruits

That is enough players if UT could keep the best in-state.

While it is only good enough to be 6th best in the conference...that still is ok. Couple that with the fact that in 2019 & 2020 (most recent I could find), UT had the 3rd highest recruiting budget in college football.

2019 College Football Recruiting Budget Rankings

2020 24/7 College Football Recruiting Budget Rankings

They just need a football coach with more personality than a piece of asparagus...and they should be able to compete in recruiting again.

Why is MSU in a football thread re: program prowess?

Go sit at the kids table and play with your cowbell.

Anyways TN has the recruiting base, we just need the right coach.

IMO there is only one coach who could turn Tenn around. Maybe if y'all promise to name Neyland to Saban Stadium or rename Knoxville to Sabaxville he would come.

Two of my best friends are die hard Tennessee football fans. They have all but given up on their team ever rebounding while Saban is at Alabama and seem to find no joy in watching their beloved Vols on Saturday afternoons. My best friend was over at their house this past fall while watching them play Auburn. Tennessee jumped out to a 10-0 lead. My best friend described the Tennessee fans as being completely emotionless and non-responsive to this unexpected chain of events. They knew what would happen in the end. And sure enough, Auburn came back and won the game by double digits. I don't think I had ever heard a more pitiful tale before in my life.

Interesting - thanks for the info. While not quite yet at the level of a hotbed, looks like Tennessee does hold its own from a talent perspective.

They were hopeless because we should have been up three scores at half, but weren't because Guarantano stunk it up like he did all year.

Thats the thing, Tennessee has the in-state talent to be a consistent 8-9 win team, it's just that the greatest dynasty in football history is a constant fixture on the schedule, and you have the premier football program in the most talent dense state as another fixture on the schedule, and a top team in the most talent filled state as another fixture. So we get compared to them, and yeah we'd have to beat them to win anything, but the problem with the last decade isn't that we're lacking in talent to UGA, UF, and Bama, it's that we've squandered the talent we HAVE had by hiring such terrible coaching staffs. Look at what Kentucky and Missouri have done, and Tennessee has not only more in state talent than those states, but are more of a fixture in better talent areas than either of them(metro ATL, VA, The Carolinas vs Ohio/Michigan for UK, TX/OK for Mizzou). Not saying it's going to change anytime soon, but all it takes is the right coach. If Franklin had come(even though I don't like him) the narrative around the nation would be that Tennessee has turned the corner, recruiting would be on fire. If they had hired Kiffin in 2017 we'd be back to 9-10 wins already. If Tennessee wins 8, they'll land a top 7-8 class and they'll be ranked to start next year. It's getting more and more perilous, but the first sign of life will always ignite a fire at Tennessee. The issue is, will it be used to make the house warm or burn it down?

I know, right? He was talented, but we've had at least two LBs better than him in the last decade, and some much better defensive players.

Not to mention, as long as the SEC money is there, there are 13 programs in this conference that just need the right coach to catch fire.

The world was very different 110 years ago. Vols should focus on a team like Vandy.

Awhile back, someone on this board said something that made a whole lot of sense, once you considered it- Clemson.

Tennessee and Clemson can not coexist in this current world. They share the same OOS recruiting pool, and Clemson is currently sucking everyone up. Kids in Georgia that don't want to go to UGA, who once went to Tennessee, now go to Clemson. It's little coincidence that as Tennessee declined, Clemson emerged.

That's the key for the Vols. They need to break that connection somehow.
