Vol Football: History doesn't repeat but it rhymes

At the turn of the 20th Century, the Vols fell on hard times.
From 1901-1910, the Vols went 38-41-10 (0.4270 Win %) over 6 different coaches.
Then from 1911 to 1952, the Vols went on one of the most dominant runs in CFB history going 244-66-21 (0.7372) with 4 coaches between Clevenger (0.628) to the GOAT Neyland (0.829) all carrying pretty dominant programs.
Now from 2009 to present, we've gone through 4 FT coaches with a 73-75 (0.4932). Not pretty.
Not sure Heupel is the guy but we've been here before and we're gonna rise again. Soon.

Honestly, I don’t see how UT recovers.

People said the same thing in 1910.
Our forefathers kept the newspaper clippings of haters claiming the same thing in their outhouses and wiped their arse with it.
Went on to be a blue blood bc that's what blue bloods do.

With a not-so-strong talent base in Tennessee, you’ll need out of state kids to take a leap of faith to join your current coaching staff. You guys need a big name coach that kids will believe in if you have any reasonable chance of sustainably recovering.

Umm… you do realize that 1910 and 2021 are pretty different.
There’s simply too much talent spread around the country now for Tennessee to magically come back.
You would have to land a big time coach like Saban/Jimbo/Kirby that could get top 5 classes.
Your best defensive player in a long time just left and went to Bama. Tennessee is in trouble, and honestly it’s probably only going to get worse before it gets better.
Tennessee’s name has fallen too far to recruit itself now. Sure you’ll get an occasional 5 star that just always wanted to play for Tennessee or something, but so does USC, Oregon, Texas, etc. and those schools aren’t doing diddly either.

I knew it was bad when they tried to hire LSU's new linebackers coach as their defensive coordinator.
And he declined.

And the 2020s/2030s could be a lot different for the 2010s.
Nashville is growing like crazy and it's not slowing down anytime soon. It's going to be a hotbed.
Georgia/Florida/Texas kids have pretty high out-of-state prospect levels. Heupel has in-roads in FL from UCF and TX from his OU days.
It can be different. It's a much different situation from Nebraska.

I remember when y'all tried to compare Butch to Neyland because he had the same haircut. Good times.

I think the "UT is dead because of recruiting" argument is silly. UT has always recruited nationally and had a huge budget for it. Its also situated in the middle of a pretty talented area (Middle/East TN, VA, Carolinas, Georgia). If Butch Jones can bring in a #4 and a #7 class, then anyone can do it.
It just takes a coach worth a damn, which we haven't had since Kifdawg left in the middle of the night.
We might never be good again, but thats more of a symptom of absolutely atrocious AD decision-making over a 20 year period of time (literally any choice they made was the wrong decision) and unprecedented levels of fan apathy rather than anything related to the recruiting environment.

Boom. When you scrape the bottom of the barrel for coaches, you are going to get shite results. We need Huepel to stabilize the program for a few years. Nothing special, win some games, show some promise. Return the stability and bring in some revenue. Give us a platform to make an elite, ridiculous money hire somewhere a few years down the line.

I see your point, but if Tennessee keeps having losing seasons, I don’t see a top coach taking over.
Tennessee has a name, but it’s not as strong as Alabama.

The problem is lots of places are willing to throw ridiculous money at a coach....places with better resources and recruiting areas. Tennessee needs to keep doing what they are doing with hiring good G5 coaches or hot assistant coaches. One of them has to hit eventually

If dumbass Jeremy Pruitt can land 2 5*s and a top 15 class, it can be done.

Do you work for the UT AD? What a dumb suggestion. Thats what got us here.

Surprised no one went for the ULLF coach yet.

Whatever it takes to feel better about the Tennessee football program completely tanking with no end in sight.
