Now maybe Uncle Verne can get the help he needs for his drinking problem.

Verne was entertaining, but not in a good way. I don't hate him, but not sure I will miss him.
And if we never had another CBS Afternoon game, I would be OK. The TV official spends more time on the field than the QB.

His knowledge and specifics needed to be saavy are severely lacking now days. It's due to old age, but his voice and charisma are 2nd to none. His big play enthusiasm and phrasing is the best in the business.

Seems like this is the 3rd year in a row he was quitting.

?
First I've heard of it. I know people speculated he was gonna quit. Kinda like Lee Corso

can't think of a better replacement than brad nessler. just get rid of gary and bring back blackledge and i will be in heaven.

I like Verne and don't understand all the negativism towards him. Harry Caray, and I liked Harry too, used to make a ton of mistakes but he's revered...Verne is great and Brad Nessler is great as well.

Much like Harry, I just assume Verne is drunk.

It was definitely time to step away, the game moves too fast for him now to keep up. He'll still be ok at golf.
At his age taking a step back to call golf is warranted. Verne called a hell of a game down the years.
He had a good run and now he is done. What more can you ask?

Same here, though I'm hopelessly biased. He was the sports guy for the ABC station in Dallas when I was a kid (so yeah, it's probably time to retire) and a big hit for me was being allowed to stay up for the late local news and take in all he had to say about the Cowboys. He was the man.

The end of an era. Things just won't be the same.

Seems like a harmless uncle who just enjoys SEC teams and games.
That's a high paying job for doing practically nothing, and the fact that he's incompetent at doing it only underscores how far past time it is for him to go.

I've just never felt that CBS gets college football.

Am i alone in admitting that I actually didn't mind Verne? Gary is the clown I couldn't stand.

I agree most of the time, although Gary does seem to have a knack for calling a play before it happens. I've never seen anyone better at anticipating what an offense is going to do in the booth. But he is a whiner...I can't stand a whiner.

Definite mixed feelings about this one. Guess it's a good thing cuz before we beat UGA last year we were like 0 for our last 5 billion on games we played in that they commentated.

I think he's been great overall, even the last few years, him bungling a name every now and then isn't that big of a deal.
His excitement is great.
