You think more people smoked weed in the 1960's than they do now?

You'll be the most careful driver on the road. So much that you'll cause other people to wreck
Seriously though, no one should drive if they've had a mg of cannabis or a drop of alcohol.

Its legalization in recent years has an effect, but yes. Over 1/3 of HS seniors were smoking Marijuana in the 70s. That is still a peak percentage.

No. Just no. I would say that at least 40% or more of adults smoke at least occasionally now. That wasn't the case in the 70s. Hell, if we did mandatory drug testing at work, we would probably lose 75% of our employees.

Yeah I had to slap a few of you nerds around in T-Town smoking that shite in plain view of kids.
Sorry I ruined your dope head party.

Yeah, late 1970's, drugs coming out the wahzoo. I'd guess drug use in the US peaked about 77-80.
Edit, I don't know what is current in local high schools, but I went to a pretty good high school with many smart kids with middle to upper middle class background. 2 years after I graduated, drug dogs were often there doing pop searches. I think this helped drop Mary Jane use from then on.

I’m still quite comfy smoking cigs, cigars, or weed in public. Speaking of - had a great time at the Orion. Billy strings in Huntsville was good stuff.

Sorry, you haven't arrived until you have shootings on campus on gameday. You're getting close, though.

It’s not as off putting as cigarettes. This is coming from a former chain smoker. Switched to vape then now zyn (best thing ever). I cannot stand the smell of cigarette. Don’t know I put up with the smell for 10 years.
Ex smokers tend to complain the most about the smell, but I quit 4 years ago and it doesn’t bother me at all except for that it makes me want one. I grew up around a lot of smokers and it never bothered me as a kid either, so maybe it’s just me.

Lea is a great coach, I just wonder what’s going to happen when that QB gets social security and retires next year. But honestly if I’m a mobile QB with talent I’d go play for Lea in a heartbeat

1970s — The Peak Era
Prevalence: The highest rates ever recorded among teens and college students.
High school seniors: ~37% reported using marijuana in the past month (late 1970s).
College students: ~51% reported ever using it by 1979.
Why: Cultural normalization during the counterculture and post-Vietnam years. Music, movies, and “hippie” culture all made marijuana mainstream for youth.
Peak decade for teen and young adult marijuana use overall.
1980s — Sharp Decline
Prevalence: Major drop across all youth groups.
High school seniors: Monthly use fell from 37% (1978) to ~14% (1992).
Why: Reagan-era “Just Say No” campaigns, stricter enforcement, and declining social acceptance.
Lowest use since the 1960s.
1990s — Resurgence
Prevalence: Marijuana use rebounded sharply, especially mid-decade.
High school seniors: Monthly use rose from 12% (1992) 24% (1997).
Why: Cultural shifts, music (grunge/hip-hop), and growing skepticism toward “war on drugs” messaging.
Second-highest decade after the 1970s.
2000s — Plateau and Gradual Rise
Prevalence: Stayed moderate, with slight increases late in the decade.
High school seniors: Monthly use around 20%.
Young adults (18–25): Around 16–18% reported past-month use.
Why: Normalization continued, but no big spikes; early legalization debates began.
2010s — Legalization and Record Young-Adult Use
Prevalence: Teens’ rates stayed stable or dipped slightly, but young adults’ use hit record highs.
Young adults (18–25): Past-month use rose to ~23% by 2019.
Why: Recreational legalization, reduced stigma, increased availability through vaping and edibles.
Highest use among young adults (not teens) in modern times.
2020s — Stabilization, with New Forms
Prevalence: Teen use stable or slightly down; young adult use remains high (~25–28% past-month).
Why: Widespread legalization, new consumption methods, and substitution for alcohol in some groups.

Agreed. I stopped cigars and now the smell is actually kind of noxious to me. It used to be my favorite smell in the world

In a town where there are thousands of adults openly drinking and getting drunk, you had a big problem with people openly smoking weed? That makes a ton of sense. You sound like a blast.

Growing up going to OU games in the '60s and '70s when there was no such thing as tailgating...
One of my favorite memories was the smell of cigarette smoke in the crisp autumn air while walking from campus corner to the stadium... with all the scalpers holding up tickets in the air like a hand of cards.
ONE HUNDRED PERCENT! That is my VERY first memory of Tiger Stadium at age 5. The distant smell of cigarettes and BOURBON in the air.

As a cig smoker (yes i know, trashy) i agree with this. I at least make sure when I smoke a cig to go off far away from anyone so they don't smell it.

He may have just been messing with you boys.
Can't speak to what an 81 year may or may not know about pot but I am 60 and smoked pot the first time in 1977 at 12 and the last time I smoked pot was around 1984 when I was first subject to piss testing as a condition of employment. In that era it stank when smoked but it smelled like Jute or Manilla rope burning...not pleasant but not nearly as bad as it smells today. The THC content in the best pot money could but in the 70's and 80's is nothing compared to what is being grown today. I don't know if that is what makes it stink so bad but it is a combination between skunk and Varsity Drive Through onions....shite is horrendous. It has to be bad for it to be noticeable from a car in front of you at 80 MPH and 100 feet ahead of you. I don't know how anyone tolerates in their homes, cars or on their clothing....its bad. I may retire any minute but for certain sometime in the next 7 years and as soon as I do I am taking up pot again but I ain't smoking it, it stinks far to bad. If someone walked around with their arse stinking day in and day out someone would eventually mention it to them....but folks who smoke pot go through life with everything they own and smoke around smelling worse than 3 day unwashed arse and no one says a word.....
