With Pac-10 schools going 14-16 against non-conference foes (including an embarrassing 1-6 mark against the Mountain West); with half the conference under .500; with the Washington schools playing their worst football in a generation, the BCS computers could not have been less impressed with the Trojans' seven Pac-10 victories.

"But at least they're in the Pac-10," Carroll interrupted, as I ticked off the woes of the Bruins and Cougars and Huskies. "What conference is The Citadel in?"

A millisecond later, he was spouting assurances that he had nothing but respect for The Citadel (a member, incidentally, of the Southern Conference, one of the strongest leagues in the FCS, formerly known as I-AA). But the battle was joined.

"Who's better?" he asked, "Oregon State or Ole Miss?" Which team is more deserving of a shot at the national title, in other words: the team that lost to the Beavers in Corvallis, or the one that got rolled by Mississippi in their own Swamp?

"Oregon State is vying for a conference championship. What's Ole Miss doing?"

Carroll's main point: Before we reflexively concede that SEC teams play stronger schedules than the rest of the world, cast an objective eye on their slate of non-conference opponents. While Florida deserves credit for taking on Florida State, and even Hawaii -- a Sugar Bowl team last season -- the Gators also enjoyed a mid-November exhibition against The Citadel. Georgia hosted Georgia Southern, South Carolina waxed Wofford, LSU welcomed Appalachian State. Mississippi's eight victories included romps past Memphis, Samford and Louisiana-Monroe. Wins over those same ULM Warhawks, and Tennessee-Martin, couldn't save the job of Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville.

oh please let Mizzou beat OU and give the shot to USC over UTx (since they didnt win conference) against a SEC team...thats all i want for xmas...

why people care more about nonconference schedules than teams' entire schedule is beyond me?

I don't care that USC played OSU and OSU. That's two decent teams. UF is going to have played UGA and Bama, two teams that are both better than OSU and OSU.

The nonconference schedule argument is old and stale.

Love how he's using the argument that a 4 loss team vying for their championship is a good thing.

Georgia is not better than either OSU. USC has played Ohio St. Oregon and Oregon St. That is 3 teams better than any that Florida has played to date.

But Stanford, WSU, Washington, Arizona State, Arizona, UCLA, Cal are good get the frick out of here with that shite. The Pac 10 is garbage, i hope Florida plays USC because your so called great defense against these shitty teams which have padded your stats, hasn't seen anything near Florida all year.

Ole Miss is ranked higher than Oregon St in the AP and they both have 4 losses. Carrol is an idiot.

I think they're about on par with Ohio State and better than Oregon State.

Good teams like USC and Florida may drop a game but they rarely get crushed.

The problem I have with Oregon State is that they lost to Penn State and Oregon by an average of 29 points. Good teams don't get blown out like that, especially with the conference championship on the line.

Ohio State's only blowout loss was to USC. They played a good game against Penn State and lost at home. Their quality wins are...

Oregon lost 3 and none of the losses were that bad however they don't have one quality win.

That being said Georgia has zero quality wins.

Florida doesn't have many great wins but with a win over Bama they'll have a better resume than USC. I'm not going to say USC shouldn't play... playoff.

Dear Petey,

Many conferences have a title game. Any team in any of those conferences that make their title game (i.e. Florida) play one more game than you.

So your argument is actually:
They played the Citadel while we played no one?

13 > 12, simple math eliminates your argument.

Enjoy the Rose Bowl.

IMO USC vs. UF would receive so much more hype over a OU/UF match up.

This argument makes no sense.

A mediocre team is vying for the Pac 10 championship. YAAAAAY!!!
