1945 Alabama should claim instead of 1941
1945 went 10-0 (6-0 in conference) and won the Rose Bowl over USC
The 1945 team also had the greatest Alabama player of all time on it. Harry Gilmer
They also should claim 1966. They were back to back defending National champions going for a 3 peat. And somehow ND and Mich St who tied each other got voted ahead of them. That would never ever happen today

Prior to 1998 it was the world we lived in when it came to crowning a NC. Sports writers in the big cities of the North and West Coast ruled the roost. They could select their sucked up Big 10 an Pac 10 champs at will. For example, look at the Michigan and Nebraska 1997. But because of the sports writers they shared it with Nebraska.
Prior to 98 it was up to the school to claim the Natty if it was presented to them by any poll. Some schools claim them and some didnt. Thats what you see in the first half of the 20th century.
If Bama claimed it prior to 1998, well good for them. So did every other school in the country. Look at Notre Dames NCs. They claimed almost everything prior to 98 and still sucked

1979 Alabama was the only unbeaten untied team in the country. Played #2 ranked Arkansas in the Sugar Bowl and kicked their butt 24-3. Why was that one left off. The Hogs dropped to #8 after the butt kicking.

I have no proof to back it up, but I think Bama chose to claim '41 and '73 while pointedly not claiming '66 and '77 to make a point. I don't think it was a very good point, but I think that's why they chose to do it.

So Alabama has more than 2 times the # of titles than any other team and Saban has 2 times more than any coach....ok.
