“Some people may question, hey, we've got the University of Alabama, which in reality for me fighting in Coleman Coliseum was one of my dreams,” Wilder, 29, told The Tuscaloosa News. “When I go in there to watch an Alabama basketball game, I look around and I saw this is beautiful for boxing, this is a perfect place for boxing, but on the other hand I feel I've been done wrong many times when dealing with Alabama.”

quote:

Despite interest from Wilder and his management and promotional team, the university's lack of interest in hosting the bout at Coleman Coliseum originated with UA President Judy Bonner, who informed the athletic department in April that she had reservations about allowing Wilder's title defense to be held on UA's campus.

quote:

Wilder's co-manger, Jay Deas, said he contacted UA promptly after Wilder's management team agreed with a television partner, Showtime, on a June 13 fight date to gauge UA's interest in holding the fight at Coleman Coliseum. Deas said he “never personally heard back.”

“We wanted to do the fight, initially, in Tuscaloosa, and Coleman Coliseum was the place to do it,” Deas said. “The city of Tuscaloosa expressed a lot of interest in it, and so they reached out to the university and for whatever reason it died right there.”

There is a lot more information in the article.

Sad, really. I would have thought they would have welcomed him with open arms. Would have been a big deal for Ttown.

Not surprised this happened with bama though.

Your obsession with Bama is remarkable. Most would consider you Bama's newest beat writer.

Blame Judy Bonner. It was her call. But this event would have impacted Alabama basketball and gymnastics camps going on around the same time. Tough on coliseum staff.

The city would have loved to host an event like this. But there's no arena or convention center that currently exists for such an event.

I don't have a problem with them not letting him use Coleman.

Basketball and gymnastics make money. Softball may as well.

Except the city of Tuscaloosa expressed a lot of interest. It was the president's call.

Well...it does make money. It might not give off the appearance of a program or fanbase that really gives much of a frick - it surely doesn't, in fact - but it certainly operates as a program far in the black.

it still counts. Just because half of the people don't show up, it doesn't mean they didn't buy tickets.

Alabama basketball was 13th in the country in revenue last year. Clearly it makes money.

Boxing is a very sleazy business and always has been. Maybe The University doesn't care to do business with a bunch of scumbags?
