So, if it’s close at playoff time this year, Bama should not get in because they got destroyed by Clemson last year and your logic holds that would have to happen again.
That's not how this works.
Had the playoffs existed in 2004, Auburn would have gotten in as the #3 seed and would have played Oklahoma in a post-season game.
There were no playoffs in 2004, however, and so only two teams were given a shot at the national championship at the time. USC and Oklahoma just happened to run the table after being preseason ranked #1 and #2 respectfully. Bad luck for Auburn, but it was the system that was in place at the time.
Had Auburn not been so lackluster against an injury-riddled 6-4 Alabama team, Auburn might have edged OU out in the final BCS standings. They were ranked #2 in at least one poll going into the Iron Bowl. They dropped back down to #3 after that game due to their poor showing.

Texas A&M - 1994: 10-0-1
Just looked this up -- the SWC standings that year are something to behold -- a 5-way tie for what would have usually been 2nd place in the conference, held by 5 teams each with 3 conference losses. But A&M was under sanctions at the time, so that 5-way tie became a 5-way tie for the conference championship. 5 3-loss conference champs in one season... that is just hilarious to me.

Had Auburn actually played an AQ OOC they would've edged Oklahoma. But they refused to.

Leinart>Campbell.... Leinart won the Heisman
That makes him better...or were his stats inflated by scheme and poor competition.

Reggie Bush/Lendale White was a better duo than Cadillac and Ronnie Brown IN COLLEGE.
Other than ESPN telling us this over and over and over again anybody who played them both thought differently.

Now do them since 1960, then 1970.

LSU never lost in the calendar year 2011. 14-0.

I have no reason to think that Auburn would have won against a regular season AQ OOC in 2004.
