That's a fantastic question.

How could a school take Mullen over Gary Patterson at TCU? Especially when you consider Mullen is going to cost a school between 4 and 5 million a year. Patterson won't cost near that.

4 and 5 million? Are you high?

2.5 million tops. PSU will go inhouse and PSU fans will revolt, alot of 'em are getting tired of the octogenarian hanging on. PSU AD could man up and go after a Mullen. FSU's AD bit the bullet and he's glad now.

Mullen already makes $2.75 million with incentives that could bump it up to $3 million

Wow, at least have some knowledge of the situation before you open your mouth.

all this speculation is very premature for Mullen and UNC. UNC probably won't start narrowing down its candidates until mid-season and may not make the hire until after the season if the selectee is currently coaching. for Mullen, his time to trade up ended in January. Now he's got to play a new season to see where his stock gets revalued.

As a new hot coach, he's got to show that he can sustain and improve, or he'll lose his luster. Last year, he finished 5th in the SEC West with quality wins over Florida in Gainesville and UGa in Starkville. Houston Nutt @OM has beaten a much better Gator team in Gainesville, so that's not a huge achievement. And UGa struggled last year as well. This year, MSU needs to pass Auburn to improve to 4th in the West. It won't be easy. Nor will beating UGa in Athens. And SC should be favored in Starkville, although i do see that game as SC's biggest chance to trip if they get by UGA.

Woe is us. It won't matter what UNC does, Mullen is not leaving State for North Carolina. It's not happening.

Plus, that's 3 million in State with the lowest cost of living in the Union.

Its going to take 4 to 5 million to get him out of Starkville.

3 Million is what he makes at State. His buyout is 1.8 Million.

I will go slow for you, For the first year, 3 Million + 1.8 Millon = 4.8 Million.

I am sure you are right though, Mullen is going to take a pay cut to go shomewhere else. This doesn't even take into account that State will go up to 4 million a year to keep Mullen.

Doubt they would go after Mullen, they need a good recruiter at UNC.

No one here has said they couldn't. I was just pointing out how wrong you were on the 4-5 million comment.

Psu is staying in house.

What makes you think PSU wants Mullen? Serious question.

I'm not saying anything with absolution here, but at this time PSU does not want to stay in house.

The current powers that be at PSU want to make a clean break. They wouldn't have tried twice to get Paterno out of there just to turn around and keep his staff on-board. JoePa was basically saved by the old guard donators.

As to why that's why I'm pretty sure they aren't going in house is for two reasons. One is that Tom Bradley, PSU's DC lives in Pittsburgh did a bunch of interviews this past winter practically outright saying that none of the current staff will be in place in the future.

Secondly, my best friend went to PSU, his family are huge donors, very well connected, some of the folks that helped keep JoePa in place. We're talking 45 yard line luxury box kind of donation people. He's also been saying that when they hire a new coach it'll be a total changeover and they sent feelers out to how the big donors would respond to different coaches, Mullen was one of the names that was brought up.

So is this all direct information, hell no. Could I be completely wrong, hell yes. But this is college football, you follow the money. And if a University athletic department representative asks a multi-million dollar donor how he feels about a coach, or better yet, if his hiring would alter their pattern of donation; you can bet your arse he's being considered.
