Never happen. The UNC BOT ensured they will get no major HC contender for the next few years, coupled with their soon to be probation.

The problem with anyone, including Mullen and Malzahn looking at UNC is that it's a recruiting nightmare. UNC, NC State, Duke, Wake Forest and East Carolina all within 50 miles of each other. Within a three or four hour drive you can add UVA, VA Tech, Clemson and South Carolina into the mix. Basically recruiting against 4 teams in your backyard is tough, even tougher when there are 8 teams right in the sweet spot of your recruiting base. Easy to pass on that gig. Real tough to get ahead there.

I think Mullen is probably like others have said waiting on PSU. Take his PSU connections, add to that that his wife is from Pittsburgh and her family has PSU connections (She was in my class in high school) that it seems like the situation that he's waiting on. Mullen will definitely be in the mix for that job. Hard to see how he'd pass on it, also the brass at PSU are looking for a complete break from the old guard when Paterno is gone. No way they hire in house this time. Mullen is perfect for what they need.

So instead of waiting for a good program, he'll hop to a probation-bound basketball school just because it's a HC job?

Do you see Malzahn landing a better job when he makes the jump?

Take away the NCAA mess and UNC is about as good as it's going to get. A big time program isn't going to take the risk on a coordinator with a gimmick offense.

Well hell that seals the deal than Mullen definitely the next HC at PSU.

He's is on the short list there. I have a few good PSU connections, I'm not saying that it will happen or even if he'll make it down to the last few names or any of that bullshite. I can say is that his name has been mentioned in internal talks about their future.

I would compare the UNC job to the UF job pre-Spurrier

Not Sure If Serious.

before Spurrier, UF wasn't a top 25 job and the program never really accomplished much. (No SEC Championships)... Post Spurrier, 8 SEC Championships, 3 National Championships... easily a top 5 job.

UF and UNC both are in large states with good recruiting. (UNC can recruit nationally today, whereas UF didn't have that ability pre-Spurrier.) Both are strong in their overall athletic program. Both have huge endowments, and more big dollar donors because of the academic reputation of the school. In some ways, UNC could be a better job because it would be much easier to get to BCS through the ACC then through the SEC. UNC has more fan support for football than MSU, and football is their 2nd sport.

it's all up to Mullen. if he wins... somebody will hire him away. if he plateaus, he may be at MSU for his career.

Yes. Gus is on the short list of several programs right now, if OM opens up, well not if but when, he is expected to get an offer.

The gimmick offense crap again? Dear god how long will be people believe this stupidity? UF went with Muschamp when all other programs had moved on from him due to some of his interview issues. Gus has a very big name right now and he's waiting for a decent job in a major conference and right now UNC is not it, they are about to get hit with major sanctions, the BOT just made it known football is on the back burner they'll be lucky to get an assistant from Troy as HC unless they make a major shift or offer major cash.

Dan Mullen is not going to North Carolina. We can argue semantics till we are blue in the face, but at the end of the day, it is not happening.

Would North Carolina love to have him? Yes they would. Can they lure him away from State? Nope.

SCar's biggest competition for recruits in NC is Clemson. But UNC under Butch was formidable. UNC also was able to get a couple recruits out of SC like Robert Quinn. Virginia has plenty of recruits for VPI & UVA, so they don't venture away from the Commonwealth much. But UNC has gotten some players like Ronald Curry from their hotbed in Tidelands/ Hampton Roads area.

UNC is a good job. If they want Mullen, they can get him. But I'm not sure they'll want Mullen. UF passed on him. UNC's AD Baddour announced today that he's retiring next summer, but they're going to hire his replacement now to oversee hiring the football coach. SCar's AD Eric Hyman played football for UNC and his wife played basketball for the Heels. He's very close w/ Roy Williams. He may be their logical first choice. If he takes the job, he'll make sure football has the resources to be successful and he'll get that assurance. Before coming to SC, he was the AD at TCU where he hired Gary Paterson. My money right now would be on Gary being the coach at UNC. UNC's penalties are going to be minimal now that they've thrown Butch under the bus.

There is much more that goes into Penn State making a run at Mullen. Paterno is going to want to hire in house, which is going to put the AD in a tough spot.

Beyond that, what happens with the rest of the staff? Does Mullen have to keep Coach Pa's staff? Does PSU get ride of Paterno's entire staff when he retires? Coach Pa isn't going to go for that. In fact I've been told that's been the hang up on him leaving in the past.

That's just the tip of the iceberg with PSU too. I don't expect Mullen to get offered that job. I'm much more worried about Texas or somewhere like that.

my bad. it's been 8 years since i've lived in the Old Dominion. ... so you can attest to the quality and quantity of talent in that area. coupled w/ the state of NC, UNC is loaded w/ potential.

UNC had 9 players drafted by the NFL in April...4 in the first 2 rounds. MSU only had 4 drafted w/ 1 in the first 2 rounds. And UNC still probably has more talent in 2011 than MSU.
