You could do it without this - just organize two pods each into a "division" and declare a winner of each division. This gets around having to petition NCAA for a new rule, but also introduces problems with tiebreakers etc. But I think the big advantage of 4 pods is to ensure that each team is actually playing every other team in the other "division" more often (thereby satisfying teams that want to have a presence in certain geographical areas etc.)

Yeah, two 8 team divisions in a 16 team conference just doesn't sound fun. Until there's perhaps an 8 team playoff and the division winners are guaranteed a spot (assuming four 16 team conferences).

I'm with you on the second paragraph but not clear how the first part works.

If you functionally have 8 teams per division it is pretty hard to declare a winner out of the group fairly unless they all play each other at least once.

UNC ain't coming, either.

NC State is in.

I'll admit that I've read how it would work but don't recall the details - but you're right, all "division" teams might not play each other. But that didn't stop the Big10 from crowning a champion back when each team didn't play every other team.

It's not elegant, I agree....but I think a conference would have to weigh the likelihood of the NCAA allowing a conference "playoff" (good grief, it's the year 2012 and we're just now getting a national playoff) against the problems associated with 4 pods of 4.

And to my point about division winners getting into a playoff automatically - that doesn't solve the issue we've all been arguing based on last year, where arguably the best two teams played in the same division. No easy answers.

yeah, but they used to declare multiple champs as a result

so long as the teams with an argument played at least once it seems fair. obviously in the SEC or Big 12 sometimes the teams considered best are in the same division
