Great History Summary of OU vs TexASS. The football aspect of it was very informative. It is great to capture these facts while you can . I may copy this to my notes so 10 ears from now I still have it,
Not football but here is a link to the “Bridge War” between Oklahoma and Texas. LINK

That's awesome! I came along a little too late to take part in the best of craziness on Commerce the night before the game. But man, the stories...
Thousands of drunks from two groups who despised each other congregating in one spot...and getting drunker by the minute. What could possibly go wrong?
Overcrowded hospitals from the brawls that broke out and even the occasional death.
Hundreds of people paying their public intox fines and getting out of jail Saturday morning, just in time to get to the fairgrounds for the game.
Really wish I could have been there.

When I went to school there in the late 2000s, I’ll never forget the riot squad lining all of West End. A fight would break out every 5 minutes and they’d rush off the wall zip tie them and throw them in a paddy wagon. It was insane.

In the 1970s-1990s they had everybody walking down the streets in one direction with barriers and riot cops about every 15 feet. It was pretty structured. Then at about 2 AM they brought out street cleaners to spray water on everybody to get them to go home.
Before that it was complete chaos. People were milling about the street in and around the traffic. The organization started occurring because in 1967 and 1968 storefront glass windows were being broken out and people started tossing furniture out of hotel room windows down onto the street.
I think at it's peak they had about 700 people get arrested on Friday night before the game. Mostly Dallas locals but some fans.
I think it was about 1993 they had some gang violence and somebody got killed. So they shut that down and had a tamer event on the west end. Finally that faded out and the street parade traditon finally went away.

The rule was simple, public intoxication was allowed so long as you kept
walking or an officer would get in your face real quick.
One year my older brother with his petite wife was in a Sooner group and when they got to one end of Commerce where you crossed to walk back the other way there was a commotion going on. This one Texas guy was carrying a Wiffle bat and he had approached the knot of people all screaming at each other. Wiffle bat guy took aim at a Sooner fan who was turned away from him, reared back to take a big league swing but my petite sister-in-law reached up and kind of tugged on the end of the bat just enough to over balance him, causing him to fall into another group which started another whole commotion as my brother's group moved on.
