45 years old. Wife and 4 kids. RIP to a great player and coach for UK.

It is with great sadness that we share the news that John Schlarman has passed away following a two-year battle with cancer. From his All-SEC playing days as a Wildcat to his eight years as the leader of the “Big Blue Wall,” he embodied Kentucky Football in body, mind, and spirit. He was 45 years old.

“I’m heartbroken to learn about the passing of my friend, John Schlarman,” Kentucky head coach Mark Stoops said in a press release. “My prayers go out to LeeAnne and the kids, Joseph, Benjamin, Matthew and Evelyn, through this very difficult time.

“John was everything we all strive to be – honest, tough, fair, respected. Kentucky football won’t be the same without him but his legacy will never fade. He was a fighter and we will strive every day to honor his warrior spirit.”

I knew when he didn't make the trip to Knoxville and/or Missouri, he was deteriorating quickly. What a shame. 45 years old. Really puts life in perspective.

Truly a Kentucky guy. I think everyone knew this was coming when he missed the Mizzou game (first one he had missed since being diagnosed).

I got the opportunity to meet him when he was recruiting a kid I worked with and he always stuck his head in when he came by to say hello and talk football. Just an absolutely humble guy that was happy to be at UK with Stoops.

This is heartbreaking. No two ways about it.

Damn that is horrible. Thoughts and prayers for his family, friends, BBN and all those who loved him. That is way too young to die.

Not to make this about someone else, but tomorrow, Gary Pinkel will have been retired from Missouri for five years after his own cancer diagnosis. Does anyone know how he's doing these days?

He was always humble. Knew him back in when he came in his freshman year before I went to LSU. This one hurts. He will be missed!

Also, his father in law was a standout at Kentucky back in the day and played for the Saints.
