Not the UAB School of Medicene.

We hijacked the medical school, DWI.

Treat us fairly, and we'll think about giving it back.

I know. I still have to go through there quite a bit though, and it still feels like I'm just driving through town like any other part. Other than the occassional chance to gawk at some young thang in yoga pants.

I get what you're saying, but it really is different. Hell, it's changed since I graduated four years ago.

I don't hate UAB the school. I just hate their basketball program. With Mike Davis gone though, I won't hate them near as much.

Imagine what it was like when I was there. It's like a green paradise compared to what it was in 1994.

Damn. I don't know if I remember what it looked like back then. I was in elementary school

They did the campus green, tore down the 15th street classroom bldg, built the new parking deck and dorms when I was there.

Stop it you're making me feel old. I was a freshmen at Bama in the spring of 94.

As for UAB, it has become a really nice urban campus in my opinion and the construction in and around the medical complex the last 10 years has been amazing. Alabama fans don't hate UAB the school or even the athletic programs either. We just get tired of the UAB people being such ingrates and being so antagonistic towards UAT people. The BOT has approved hundreds of millions of dollars for UAB and all they ever get from UAB is s###. Up until about 7 or 8 years ago, UAB got WAY WAY more building project money approved from the BOT than the main campus did. You guys took it a step farther by hijacking our prized medical school. I've never heard of that ever happening in any other university system before.

Sorry. Didn't mean to do that.

I don't hate UA nor do I try to antagonize y'all about it. I just (strongly) feel that the UA BoT isn't fair when UAB is concerned about certain things.

Shouldn't have moved it up here (I kid, sorta)

Just a couple of points to add.

My diploma says University of Alabama School of Medicine.
My class was one of the last few with it as such. I was in med school when they made the switch on the patches that we wore on our white coats and the campaign began for an official UAB-SOM name.

I was told that the school of medicine moved to Birmingham for 1) patient volume, and 2) accessibility. However, the name was not changed to UAB School of Med at that time for several reasons: 1) at that time UAB did not have autonomy, 2) nationally, nobody new who UAB was, and 3) UASOM was using private hospitals (Hillman) for clinicals.

In time, UAB gained autonomy and its hospital/research exploded. Now most of the clinicals take place at UAB's hospital and most of the lectures are staffed out by UAB professors.

On another note, there is no independent medical school/branch in Tuscaloosa or Huntsville. All med students take 2 years of classes in Bham. Then ~50 students can do their clinical rotations (the remaining 2 years of med school) in Tuscaloosa or Huntsville.

How on earth did UAB get autonomy over the "University of Alabama School of Medicine" in the first place? That's like Auburn putting their engineering or veterinarian programs in Montgomery near AUM and AUM saying "frick you Auburn, it's on or near our campus so it's our program".

Sorry. I meant UAB gained its autonomy in the same sense as UAH.

I dont know how theyve managed to officially usurp the med school.
