more than the SEC has benefited from having them.
Don’t get me wrong. We’ve all mutually benefited from a monetary standpoint. But OU and TX were endangered of becoming somewhat irrelevant before the SEC came to the rescue.
You can see it in TV viewership:
From 2013-2023, Texas played in just 9 regular season games that attracted 5 million viewers or more… averaging less than one such game per season. In not even 1.5 seasons since joining the SEC, they’ve played in 5 such games already (on pace for around 3 games per season).
From 2013-2023, Oklahoma played in just 14 regular season games that attracted 5 million viewers or more… averaging around 1.3 games per season. In not even 1.5 seasons since joining the SEC, they’ve played in 6 such games already (on pace for more than 3 such games per season).
2024-2025 Regular Season Games for TX and OU averaging 5 Million+ Viewers:
16,620,000- Texas at Ohio State 2025
13,190,000- Georgia at Texas 2024
9,670,000- Michigan at Oklahoma 2025
9,450,000- Texas at Texas A&M 2024
9,190,000- Texas at Michigan 2024
7,630,000- Texas vs Oklahoma 2024
6,980,000- Alabama at Oklahoma 2024
6,270,000- Tennessee at Oklahoma 2024
6,120,000- Auburn at Oklahoma 2025
5,040,000- Oklahoma at Auburn 2024
Obviously being in the SEC has intensely increased their exposure.
Total Regular Season games played with 5 Million+ Viewers 2013-2025:
63- Alabama
54- Ohio State
40- Georgia
39- Michigan
29- LSU
28- Auburn
28- Florida
22- Florida State
21- Tennessee
21- Penn State
20- Texas A&M
20- Oklahoma
14- Clemson
14- Michigan State
14- Texas
13- Wisconsin
10- USC
10- Army
10- Navy
9- Nebraska
9- Miami
9- Ole Miss
8- Oregon
Those numbers include the surge in such high profile games since joining the SEC. Like I said, had these two so called big brands not been extended an invitation to join the SEC, they were endangered to becoming somewhat irrelevant to the average CFB viewer.

I don't care to split hairs about who got more out of the deal, but sure I acknowledge SEC membership has been a boon to the Longhorns. Sark was able to sell players on Texas being in the SEC very soon and that helped him get players he likely wouldn't have otherwise.
Looking at the current CFB landscape, there's not another conference I would rather be a part of. Every week in the SEC is titanic.

Part of our benefit is that allowing the big 10 to scoop you up would have been intolerable. Damned if you do damned if you don’t

Well, I am glad your peeps let Texas in. I fear Maryland.

Nice post Op! You should also look at the SEC payout before and the year after Missouri and Texas A&M joined
compared to the payout before and the year after OU and Texas joined.
That may be another good way to track value!

Yeah. Very true. I also think that ultimately, Florida State will get into the SEC precisely to keep the Big 10 out of the booming state of Florida. I would hate to see it, but I feel like it time it will happen.

Them turtles embarrassed us in 2002. Bad day in my childhood. I swear they had a coach named refrigerator or something

ESPN wants Texas and the SEC had to accept them. If not, Texas would go Independent with a very lucrative ESPN contract. Like it or not, fair or not, Texas is the biggest brand in college sports.

Two national blue blood brands. Auburn is a nobody.

Looking at the highest viewership games for Texas/OU that you listed...
16,620,000- Texas at Ohio State 2025
13,190,000- Georgia at Texas 2024
9,670,000- Michigan at Oklahoma 2025
9,450,000- Texas at Texas A&M 2024
9,190,000- Texas at Michigan 2024
7,630,000- Texas vs Oklahoma 2024
The majority of these games are OU and Texas playing each other or playing against a Big 10 school. One of the SEC matchups is a highly anticipated restart of the A&M rivalry, which is clearly an outlier.
Do you think the SEC would rather OU and Texas had gone to the Big 10? It is the height of SEC arrogance to think that two bluebloods joining the conference does nothing for its profile. It's laughable.

Auburn certainly hasn’t benefited.

I thought you people were supposed to be smart? There’s no way in hell the SEC would have allowed that. And if push came to shove ESPN wouldn’t have crossed their most valuable College commodity.

It is widely understood that the SEC through Texas a lifeline. Staying in the B12 was not helping the brand which they value highly.
Also, the Texas fanbase had a hard time getting pumped about playing schools like Baylor or traveling to Iowa, Kansas etc... and I don't blame them. As a Texas fan... going to the SEC was a huge upgrade in terms of interest.
Definitely on point from a brand perspective. Joining SEC has helped Texas more than the SEC.

The SEC got very good marketplaces to make money from.

It warms my heart knowing 6 million saw Auburn get robbed in the Oklahoma game.

100% true. Saturdays in fall are fun again. Thx for the lifeline.

How much was Texas sucking during that period part of your data
Posted on 9/25/25 at 1:42 pm to Tridentds
You are correct but Texas had enough leverage to go to the big 10 abd that elior gave hurt the sec. Beyond money which Texas and ou helped it might be more about what the sec gained by hurting their competitor. Many sec fanbases may hate Texas but so far we have won a few playoff games and not embarrassed the conference and kept one of if not the most important by by volume recruiting ground sec territory
