4-2-5 so there will be growing pains. Especially with such a youthful secondary.

There are going to be some big learning curves for the secondary. Lots of talent, but lots of ?s

It will probably be UGA, A&M and Tennessee in no particular order.

Returning production is great when it's from a strong unit. It's less predictive when it's from a poor unit.

From that chart, LSU has the worst case scenario. Last season their defense was horrible and their offense was incredible... but they return more of their defense than their offense.

Oklahoma was 77th in the nation in total defense. They return a lot, but their defense wasn't particularly strong. Bit worse than UF, bit better than SC when you look at SEC teams. It wasn't LSU bad (105th) but it wasn't strong.

On the other hand OU's strength was offense, which was 3rd in the nation las year. They return less on offense than any team, even LSU who lost a ton.

*** edit *** the teams who were behind OU in total defense in the SEC last year are Vandy (128th), LSU (105th) and South Caroline (87th). Every other team was better in total defense.

You should hope so, weren’t you 115th against the pass last year?

You know it's bad when the 2023 LSU defense boasts better numbers.

Moore, Sabb and Jackson all have plenty of experience. The depth after them is the question.

I did somehow miss the fact that Bama signed three(!!) 5 star CB's for the 2024 class. Hopefully at least one of those guys can figure it out early and contribute.

If Texas DL holds up we could be in top 3. We’ll be better across the board except DL. DE’s and secondary should be better.

We have identified a fan that really doesn’t comprehend the game….when the DL drops off the secondary pay bro!

A & M is always great in the preseason. It's the actual playing of games that kill them.

Fisher isn't the HC at A&M.

Miami torched the A&M defense last year

A&M had the wrong tires on. That's why they were slipping and sliding on offense and defense the whole game.

Which offenses are going to play to their defense? So many new coaches to get immediate answers now. Elko is interesting because he is such a good DC. What was Collin Klein trying to run at Kansas State? Seems like he was a spread-em-out kind of guy with pace. This team feels sneaky good.

If BAMA is even close to Kevin Steele' good on defense this season, the rest of the SEC will be clutching those pearls.

Too soon for this post it again after game 6 after everyone had a chance to grind it out.
I don’t disagree with it but I don’t actually agree with it either.

If our young secondary is as good as advertised, Tennessee will have a top 20 level defense towards latter part of the season maybe much better considering how strong our dline is. Definitely will be some early growing pains with the secondary though. We have some really exciting young talent on that side of the ball though finally again though.

For now, i think it's: UGA, Aggy and Oklahoma.

“Returning production” is one of the most useless stats.

Absolutely...since the emergence of the Transfer Portal, it has become relatively meaningless.

You know Georgia and Alabama will have solid squads, but don't sleep on Oklahoma. OU has some real studs on defense and one of the best secondary groups in the nation. A lot of returning starters.

I hear you. But you have to wonder how can the Texas Defense not miss two first rounders at DT?

Opponents will have better success running the ball and the pass rush won’t be the same.
Those two will be missed for sure, but this time last year talking about those two guys didn't really move the needle for opposing offensive coordinators. Not sure we have the next two men up that can duplicate what they did, but solid consistent play is all we need from the DT's.

You're right, the pass rush won't be the same. Wild man Ethan Burke has a year of experience under his belt and it's finally time to unleash Vasek who flashed a number of times in the spring game...not to mention a highly motivated Trey Moore and an edge everyone wanted in the last class, Collin Simmons. So yeah, expect QB harassing to be much better this year.

Venables is a good defensive mind, but "good defense" and "Oklahoma" haven't been seen together in a long time.

Yep I guess A&M did have a pretty strong defense except for a couple of their games.
