Baton Rouge should not be on this list.
LSU can be a fun place to go to school and yes LSU is a major part of Baton Rouge but Baton Rouge is too big of a city to fit this IMO

That list is turrbl.
But people love lists and that sort of thing drives internet traffic...which is the only point of any publication in 2026.
I'll give them Madison, Tuscaloosa, and Athens.
Norman is a bunch of strip malls and chain restaurants. Love Lexington, but not a college town.
Baton Rouge is a friggin dump.
Can't speak to Missoula, haven't been there.

Yea who doesn't just despise the entertainment district and frat row being in the shadow of the stadium in a town that revolves around the college.

I think to be accurate, you have to split these into 3 groupings:
Best college cities: metros over 750k
Best college mid-sized cities: metros 500k-750k
Best college towns: metros under 500k
Nashville and Austin are great college cities. Fayetteville is a great college town but with 650k people and growing it's not really a town anymore IMO... it's midsized.
Athens, Auburn, Oxford are great college towns.
Baton Rouge is just a shitty city and Tuscaloosa is a shitty town.
Best college cities: metros over 750k
