The reason I brought up Bama not winning the sec west was because LSU played 2 good teams Bama didn't because of it. Then our defense scored a touchdown in the NC game. A DL picking off the heisman winner and taking it to the crib.

Yeah but the thread is about best defense. Alabama's 2005 version deserves to be in the top 5 talk. I'm willing it say that bunch was better than anything Saban has had so far.

From a statistic standpoint, that could very well be true. The 2005 defense accomplished a lot, considering the anemic offense, and lack of depth.

This is how I would rank the Top 5 defenses in the SEC from 2000-2009.

1. 2005 Alabama
2. 2003 LSU
3. 2004 Auburn
4. 2006 Florida
5. 2009 Alabama

LINK

LSU 03 had 21 picks, 5 for TD's, 50 sacks and 12 Fumble recoveries, gave up 10.8 ppg and held the nation's top scoring offense 31 points under their average

Bama 05 had 11 picks, 1 for a TD, 20 sacks, and 1 Fumble recovery, and gave up 10.7 ppg

per rivals.

Tells me 2 things. Lsu's offense scored alot and forced other teams to risk throwing alot more. And secondly, Bama still allowed less points, while not necessarily creating turnovers and scoring.

LSU forced teams to play more aggressively in '03 because LSU's offense just scored a lot of points. I would give the edge to LSU's defense if they had as anemic an offense as Alabama had to work with in '05. That defense was on the field for the vast majority of the time and yet they still refused to yield yardage.
