The University of Oklahoma is losing $36 million a year as expenses continue to outpace revenues, the incoming president said Tuesday.

"Total debt is almost $1 billion at our Norman campus,” said Jim Gallogly, who becomes OU's 14th president July 1. Debt service costs are almost $70 million a year, he said.

We want North Carolina State and Virginia Tech. That's it. We've had enough of the Big 12 expansion party.

If we don't get North Carolina State or Virginia Tech then it's not a big deal. We're already the best conference and 14 is a good number. We can be selective.

Somebody actually thinks Oklahoma belongs in the Southeastern Conference? May as well see if Montana and Northwestern want to join too since we’re throwing regional ties completely out the window

I mean, Oklahoma borders 3 SEC states (Texas, Missouri & Arkansas) and is an hour or so away from NW Louisiana (the state, not the physical university)

Cool. Call up Notre Dame too since Indiana borders Kentucky. Hell, Illinois borders Kentucky AND Missouri and isn’t all that far from Tennessee.

Futile as it might be, I like to imagine that college football can still retain some of the regionalism that makes it unique. Oklahoma isn’t now nor has ever been a southern state. Neither is Mizzou (nor are they in any way Eastern, despite their division affiliation) but we’ve already jumped that shark so I’m not inclined to jump another if we don’t have to

The conferences are getting too big and too spread out. Yes they would bring more money to the conference and help keep escalating the facility war. But dammit the product is getting watered down and expensive for fans. Peak college football was the early to late 2000s. Just enough money being pumped in that there was lots of coverage and competitiveness but now I feel like it's getting out of control. It's fun for people from states near with schools who have decades worth of history together to play every fall. I do not give one flying frick about playing NC State or VT every fall or on a regular basis. An OOC Home and Home, why not. But I'd rather get to play Georgia, Tennesee, South Carolina, hell even Vandy and Kentucky more regularly than shuffle some ACC schools into the mix and dilute it further. Conferences were more fun when they were more regionalized. The BCS era pre shake up when Nebraska joined the Big 10 (1998-2010) was college footballs pinnacle. It was a great mixture of keeping the sport regionalized while bringing those regions together to create an interesting post season with big stakes throughout the regular season.

Put another way, UGA has yet to play Texas A&M since they joined the conference 6 years ago. How about we actually make a full tour of the conference before we go adding more teams we will have to wait to play in 20 year intervals

It's absolutely disgusting that the conference has allowed us to be in a place where there are 12 year waits between visits to opposing campuses.

I mean, that's broke as a joke. That's complete insolvency that can't be fixed without a total restructure. I can't even think of a solution to be honest. It's a state institution and the state has it's own budget issues.

If you think Oklahoma is bad, check out Cal Athletics sometime. They’re paying $18 million a year IN INTEREST ALONE. They won’t be able to pay off their stadium debts until 2113. They asked their braintrust on campus to find a better way and basically got back “naw u fukt”. There’s a decent chance Cal won’t have anything resembling an Athletics program on 20-30 years

How did this even happen? The article points the finger at building projects, but it's hard to see how they could go that far over budget.

No matter how much money the AD has this will hurt their athletic department.

The optics of them catching up with our facilities (for example) would be terrible when the school is broke even if they raise the money 100% from donors.

This might push them to do something in realignment though, and accept the offer that gives them the most money (Big 10?).
